Marcel Hirscher

Austrian’s best alpine ski racer of all time. When I first was confronted with the task of writing an article about a famous Austrian Sportswoman / Sportsman, I did not know whom to pick at first. Not that our athletes are “bad” – they just hardly ever find themselves at the international top. Then I remembered Marcel Hirscher – who is not only Austrian but also one of the most successful ski racers of all time. Marcel Hirscher was born on 2 March 1989 in Hallein (Salzburg) as a son of two skiing teachers. While his mother was Dutch, his father came from Austria and together they owned a ski school. Since the age of 15, Marcel Hirscher attended and […]

Conor McGregor

This month I will do my monthly text on Conor McGregor as he is one of the most famous sportspeople of Ireland right now. Conor Anthony McGregor was born to parents Tony and Margaret McGregor on July 14, 1988, in Dublin, Ireland. He rose from a tough neighborhood in Crumlin to become the biggest star in the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA). Conor enjoyed playing football as a child but later turned to box as an outlet for his aggression. He was a member of the Crumlin Boxing Club from the age of 11-17 where he also won a Dublin championship there. In his later teen years he worked as a plumber but left to pursue his dream of […]

Polish sportswoman

One of the most famous sportswomen in Poland is Anna Lewandowska. People have been practicing sports since forever. Well, not all people as women were not allowed to watch or participate in the Olympic Games in ancient Greece. The first modern Games did not allow women to compete either. In 1928, women were prohibited from running more than 200 meters, extensive running supposedly caused premature aging. Fortunately, now in 2016 women have been competing in nearly all sport disciplines for a very long time now, despite all the obstacles they have had to face. One of the most famous sportswomen in Poland is Anna Lewandowska. She is not only famous for being the wife of a famous Polish footballer Robert […]

Madeira: Health SPA

Which of these seems more appealing to you : ´home is where your heart is´ or rather ´home is where the money is? I was born in the Eastern part of Poland, exactly in Lublin City. With its 700-year-long history, picturesque Old Town and 9 universities (public and private) it should attract many young people. So it is, but the problem is that after they graduate from university most of them need to emigrate to find a job either to bigger cities like Warsaw, Cracow or to other European countries. That is one of the reason why after finishing my degree I did not even try to look for job in my hometown – I chose Cracow instead. After one […]

What I missed about Portugal

In spring I did my short-term EVS in Portugal, Palmela. There are some things I realised I’ve been missing. 1) The sun. Okay, so I spent my spring in sunny Portugal, went home for a sunny summer and came here to spend the next 10 months in the sun. Well, now I remember that we don’t actually have sun in Finland, even in summer. At home you have to carry your jacket with you all the time and you don’t have to wear any sun lotion. When I did both of those things here, I noticed that the first one was unnecessary and the second one was a huge mistake. 2) The food. Pasteis de nata, bolo do caco, bifanas, […]

A food lover in paradise

As anyone who knows me would expect, I will have to share my impression and love of Portuguese food. My first experience of Portuguese food was on the flight to Madeira. I have to admit that I was disappointed when I first tried pastel de nata. But that was clearly the fault of the old ones which the flight attendants gave us. I have become a huge fan of them as soon as I tasted the freshly baked ones. By now I actually have to hold myself back, so I won’t buy every single one at the bakery. And not only pastel de natas, all pastries are alluring. Another inevitable food is bolo do caco. I don’t think that I’ll […]

Irreplaceable

My project is sadly getting close to an end and it got me thinking about different aspects of my life here in Madeira, that I won’t be able to continue back home. First of all – nature and weekly hiking trips. Of course we do have amazing landscapes, mountains and forests in Poland too, but it’s not as easily accessible for me there as it is here. Never in my life I have been hiking as much as I do in Madeira. Secondly, the ocean. The atmosphere of living so close to it is irreplaceable. The salty scent, the sound of waves, the feeling of space you can only understand it if you’ve experienced that. It’s such a privilege to […]

Meeting great people

During three months, which is the period that I spent in Madeira, I explored part of the island in the weekends with some of my other colleagues. I had the opportunity, by hitchhiking, to meet a lot of people from the island. At the moment, most of the people that gave me a lift were Venezuelans, the second community of the island. Thanks to that I realized we mustn’t trust always in the media and there are people that agree and people that don’t agree at all with the socialism, most of them disagree just with the application of this ideology by the Venezuelan government and the current economic situation of their country. Anyway, they came looking for a better […]

Romance with the Mountains

I am in the middle of my EVS project and I feel hungrier and hungrier of discovering Madeira and people all around me. Is so many views to see, kilometres to walk and topics to talk about. My brain has already registered many gorgeous memories, mostly during my free time when I was among the nature, especially in the mountains. As said Peter Croft, Canadian rock climber and mountaineer: There is such good stuff in the mountains. This stuff is free and you can take it for free. Rock star says that his first love is guitar, Sailor´s heart belong to the Ocean, and I can say that Mountains are my lover. As a teenager I was very active scout, […]
