The second Queen of the Netherlands

Princess of the Netherlands, Princess of Oranje-Nassau, Duchess of Mecklenburg and Princess of Lippe-Biesterfeld. Juliana Louise Emma Marie Wilhelmina was the queen of the Netherlands between the 4th of September 1948 and 30th of April 1980 and was married to Prince Bernhard van Lippe-Biesterfeld. Together they had four daughters called Beatrix, Irene, Margriet, and Christina. In 2004 she died at the age of 94. An interesting story about Queen Juliana is that at the age of 19 she had to find her husband to secure the throne. The requirements were that the man should be Protestant, a foreigner and to be part of a Royal House that had ruled at least until 1918. The mother of Juliana, called Wilhelmina, used […]

Wladyslaw III of Poland

According to a Portuguese legend, the Polish king didn’t die in Varna but he settled in Madeira. Wladyslaw Warnenczyk was King of Poland, Hungary, and Croatia until his death at the age of 20, at the Battle of Varna in 1444. He was the first-born son of Wladyslaw Jagiello who was the founder of the Jagiellonian dynasty. The battle of Varna was a decisive Ottoman victory over the crusader alliance, led by Wladyslaw Warnenczyk and John Hunyadi-voivode of Transylvania, a leading Hungarian military and political figure. The young king was killed while personally leading his own 500-strong royal Polish heavy cavalry company to directly attack the Sultan who was protected by the guard cavalry and formidable Janissary infantry. The Janissaries […]

The golden age of Poland

Zygmunt moved Poland’s capital from Cracow to Warsaw “The Golden Age of Poland” occurred during the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, formally, the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the largest and most populous countries in Europe at that time. In its largest territorial extent, the Commonwealth covered almost 1 million square km and sustained a multi-ethnic population of 11 million. Religious freedom was guaranteed by the Warsaw Confederation in 1537, which made the country one of the most tolerant. Another interesting fact is that between 1573–1795, kings to the Polish throne were selected in so-called “free elections”, disrespecting the rule of dynastic succession. The first free election took place after the last monarch of Jagiellonian dynasty died […]

Henry II of France

The twenty-fifth Capetian King of France and the son of Francis I. He is the perfect representative of the figure of a French Renaissance monarch. Indeed, under his reign (from 1547 to 1559), a lot of great writers had the opportunity to enrich the classical literature of the country. We can think for example at Montaigne, Ronsard, Du Bellay and many more. It is also at that time that the new creative and artistic movement of La Pleiade emerged. When Henry was very young, he was made the prisoner of Emperor Charles Quint, being exchanged for his father’s freedom. He is released four years later. At the age of fourteen, he is married to Catherine of Medicis with who he […]

Mapas mostram mundo do século XVIII

Documentos estiveram esquecidos durante anos no sótão do museu.

King Louis IX – Saint-Louis

He had such a strong impact on the following kings. The article this month is about a King or a Queen of my country. France with a long, and complicated history had a lot of kings, some of them are more famous than the others, such as Louis XIV for example. But today I’m not going to speak to you about the “Roi-Soleil”. Let me introduce one of the most important kings, but also a quite unknown King of France: Louis IX aka Saint-Louis. Saint-Louis is the 44th King of France, from the Capétien family, his father is Louis VIII The Lion and his mother Blanche of Castille. He became king at the age of 12, but too young to […]

Casimir III the Great

The King of Poland from 1333 to 1370. He was the last Polish king from the Piast dynasty, born on 30 April 1310 in Kowal, died on 5 November 1370 in Kraków. He was the youngest, third son of King Wladyslaw I (“the Elbow-high”) and Duchess Jadwiga of Kalisz. When Casimir attained the throne in 1333, his position was in danger, as his neighbors did not recognize his title. The Polish kingdom was depopulated and exhausted by the war, and the economy was ruined. Thanks to Casimir the kingdom became prosperous and wealthy, with great prospects for the future. He waged many victorious wars and doubled the size of the kingdom, mostly through the addition of lands in modern-day Ukraine. […]

Simple life on Madeira

If you feel that your comfort zone is actually a stagnation, just pack your backpack and go for an EVS. I remember my first impression when I arrived to Funchal in the middle of the night, almost month ago. It was three things: fresh air, flowers everywhere and sound of the Ocean. The same day I left my friends, family, job, country … my world, but I had this exciting feeling that is not the end but the beginning of something new and an amazing. The next day I met other volunteers and then I was absolutely sure that was good decision and I arrived to my little paradise. Here, for me every day is a celebration. When I go […]

Adventure time

From my first days on Madeira I couldn’t wait to explore the natural beauty of the island. Shortly after arriving to Funchal and discovering the new city, I started to count days to my first hiking adventure on Madeira. I was getting impatient to finally pack my backpack, go out of the urban area and explore the mountains and levadas the island has to offer. After three weeks the time had come. The weather was impeccable and Saturday afternoon saw me and Beata standing by the road ER103 in Monte, thumbing our way to the northern shore of Madeira. The plan was to get to Porto da Cruz and then walk along Vereda do Larano to Machico, but as it […]

Five differences

5 Things in Madeira, that are completly different in Germany First of all, I have to admit there are way more than five things that are completly different in Germany than in Madeira and it is most liky impossible to write all of them down. For me, as I am living now already 6 month here on Madeira and lived nearly my whole life in Germany, there are some small things that not only I find remarkable, but also german tourists were noticing. Obviously there are several things that the Germans are well known for, e.g. never to cross a red street light, and you don’t have to lived there for several years to realise that there are big differences. […]

Living outside

So the main point of all this experience is growing as a person, as individual human being, make from yourself better at solving difficult situations. Starting from the beginning, living outside of your parents home isn’t as easy as it looks. First of all you have to adapt to new situations that were completely covered in the easy parental environment. Take care of a lot of different things that you never expect. In that moment you realize how it’s going to be the rest of your life, in the way that no longer will be the easiness of home. Now you have to make the home by your own, trying to keep the “traditions” that in your original home you […]
