Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço

There you can see huge cliffs reaching out of the sea. This eastern peninsula of the island is from volcanic origins, it consists mostly basalt stone but also limestone sediment formations. Because of the pretty dry climate and the exposure to northern winds, there is low vegetation. It looks very different from the other parts of the island and this is what makes it so special. A nice fact is that the name of the vereda comes from the name of João Gonçalves Zarco’s caravel, São Lourenço. Zarco was one of the three discoverers of Madeira. For me, this walk is definitely one that you NEED to do when you are in Madeira, it’s one of the most beautiful walks […]

How not waste a summer in Madeira

Let me give you some non-qualified tips for the months to come. To be honest, I have not been in Madeira during the hottest months of summer. My experience started in September what I would still call summer due to the heat. Madeira is very versatile and full of possible activities. That is the reason why I love this island. People who love the sea have several options to explore the Atlantic Ocean. Snorkeling and scuba diving let you discover the biodiversity of the sea dwellers. But not everyone likes to dive in the dark and deep ocean and some rather stay above the surface of the water, at least with their heads. There are still enough activities, such as […]

E enquanto […]

Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh: of the most famous artists of the 19th century. This fame is not only because his art, but also because of his life. He was born in 1853, in a village near the Belgian border. When starting adulthood he did not really know what to do. He first became a schoolteacher, then a book salesman, studied theology and became a preacher in a coal mine. He did not really do well in all these jobs and got fired for all of them. Eventually, his brother Theo convinced Vincent to become an artist after seeing the sketches he made. He moved around in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Paris before eventually moving to the village of Arles in France, […]

Jan Matejko

Jan Matejko is probably the most known Polish painter. He born in 1838 in Krakow and he specialized in historical and battle paintings. One of his most famous canvas is “The Battle of Grunwald”, painted in 1872–1878. It represents a really important event in Polish history, the victory of the allied Crown of the Kingdom of Poland and Grand Duchy of Lithuania over the Teutonic Order in 1410. It is displayed in the National Museum in Warsaw. His other famous paintings which we can find there are: “Stańczyk” and “The Prussian Homage”, among others. It is worth to mention that Matejko is an author of the 320 or so known oil paintings mainly depicting the most momentous events in Polish […]

Gerhard Richter

The world’s highest paid living artist Gerhard Richter, born 1932 in Dresden, Germany is one of the most famous German painters of all time and called the best living painter by many. He has huge national and international success and won many notable awards again both national and international. His style changed a lot during his long career which he started in the 1950s in East Germany. In 1961 Richter fled with his wife to West Germany, he is said to have burned parts of his paintings before he left. Here he studied art at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. In 1964 he had his first solo exhibition which was the cornerstone for his success. Noteworthy is that Richter is not only […]

“O primeiro grande” dinossauro

Alvar Aalto

He did some really nice pieces of art. We were supposed to write about a painter from our own countries. But to be honest, in Finland, we don’t have any painters who would be really impressive for me or either known world-wide. So I decided to write about Alvar Aalto, an architect and a designer I personally like. Alvar Aalto was born in the 3rd of February 1898 in Kuortane. In 1921 he graduated from Helsinki’s technical academy. During his time in the academy, he took part in the civil war in Finland. After graduating he moved away from the capital city, to Jyväskylä. There he made his own architect office, following the Scandinavian design, which was popular at that time. […]

So you speak fluent Portuguese?

… is what many tourists ask, thinking living abroad would instantly bless you with perfect language skills. And to be honest: not only tourists think that. I also kind of did, thinking living in Madeira, working with locals and hearing Portuguese all around me, I would playfully pick it up. The only way of language learning I had experienced so far was by regular classes back in school. Lessons twice a week, being tortured with grammar tests, neatly copying vocabulary from the text book, reading articles… I think everybody knows what I mean. These classes gave me a good base and I kept learning and practicing these languages abroad. Meeting people from all over the world started making me curious […]

Things I don’t know

Before I arrived to Madeira, and here as well, I had a chance to meet many people of different nationalities. Here in Funchal I participate in a project that requires learning a big chunk of Portuguese and Madeiran history. My fellow volunteers are intelligent, worldly and conscious people and we talk a lot about cultural differences, economy, politics and history. Thanks to them, and others who I encountered throughout the years, I got to learn about Portuguese dictatorship and Carnation Revolution, liberation of Spanish colonies in South America, Rotterdam bombing during WWII, potato famine in Ireland, Balkan Wars that many people my age remember… Coming from Poland, country in my opinion quite obsessed with its martyrdom, I realized each nation […]

The island of the dreams…

I have enjoyed this month as much as the last one, I have met new friends, and I said goodbye to one of my colleagues, I have been in new places, and I have visited some places again. This month has been very similar and different of the last one, this is because the usual things sometimes change. Today you visit a beautiful square and tomorrow that square will be more beautiful than yesterday. Today you met new people, and tomorrow they will be your friends, and today you are enjoying with your friends and tomorrow, they will come back home and leave you fond memories. I only realized about the changes this month. It is interesting because this island, […]

Yes, I can’t

Do you suffer from putting off all your daily duties to unspecified time in the future? Are you always waiting for a better moment to do something? If you don’t know: “from where to start…?”, you can’t stand failure or you do the tasks “for now” only because you fear the consequences – it means that you might have a problem with procrastination. What is procrastination? ‘Procrastination is the avoidance of doing a task, that needs to be accomplished’ – Wikipedia. In my opinion it is a kind of pathology. Why? Because normally, nobody wants to live in never-ending tension. A procrastinator wants to have everything under control, so that person creates the appearance of normality. She or he knows […]

The (un)importance of age

Age is not as important as you think, there are tons of examples! I have to admit that this is a rather unusual theme to write about. But as I found myself more than once confronted with my age in the last time, I started to think a bit more about the (un)importance of age. I bet every one of us heard it before: “You are too young for this” or “When you are older you will understand that”. But also sentences like: “Are you not a bit too old for that?” or “I did not expect that from a person your age” are really common. I myself assume during my work as a tour guide that old people are […]
