Volunteering in Madeira

7 months in Madeira Island, with all the costs related with travel, accomodations and meals covered! What are you waiting for? SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT A walk through the History of Madeira is a project that intends to present the culture, history and heritage of Madeira through guided tours and other cultural activities such as exhibitions or fado concerts. Throughout the last few years, the University of Madeira Students’ Union (AAUMa) has been developing several initiatives with a heavy focus on Tourism and Culture, under the Madeiran Heritage program. These initiatives are also directly connected with its social support programmes, which help the local community of Madeira. Last year, through the contribution of everyone involved (EVS volunteers, portuguese volunteers and […]

The Ferdinand Cheval’s Ideal Palace

I wanted to introduce to you a special monument from France, not a very well-known one. The Ferdinand Cheval’s Ideal Palace is a National Monument since 1969. It is the work of one man: Ferdinand Cheval, a simple postman of the countryside. The Palace is in the middle of a garden in the city of Hauterives (Drôme department). During one of his daily country rounds, he found a strange stone and started to dream. His thoughts brought him to imagine an odd Palace. If nature can sculpt stones, why can’t a postman become an architect? It took him 33 years to finish it (1879-1912). There is no particular logic behind the aspect of the architecture, it is only the reflection […]

Vatnsberinn

A monument to Iceland’s working women Vatnsberinn [‘The Water Carrier’] is a modernist statue located in downtown Reykjavík. It is the work of Ásmundur Sveinsson, completed during winter 1936-1937 while the artist was a resident in Copenhagen, Denmark. Ásmundur (1893-1982) was a pioneering sculptor from Kolsstaðir, in the west of Iceland. His workshop and house form part of the Reykjavík Art Museum today. The monument is an ode to Ásmundur’s childhood in rural Iceland, where he witnessed the women there carrying large pales of water to their homes day in, day out. At the turn of the twentieth century, Iceland was an almost entirely rural country, only just witnessing the beginnings of urban and industrial development. In the first half […]

Tartarugas e o cheiro do plástico

Berlin’s Symbol of Unity

The Brandenburg Gate is one of the most important monuments in today’s Berlin with over two hundred years of history. Throughout its existence, it has been often a site for major historical events. Currently, this 18th-century neoclassical monument is considered as a symbol of turbulent German history as well as European unity and peace.  The building is located in the western part of the city and it faces Pariser Platz, regarded as one of the city’s most attractive squares. It is the entry to Unter den Linden, the renowned boulevard of linden trees, which led directly to the royal City Palace. It was designed by the German artist Carl Gotthard Langhans and was built from 1788 to 1791. It was […]

Festung Hohensalzburg

The name of my hometown “Salzburg” originates from two different events. “Salz” because of the highly relevant salt trade hundreds of years ago, and “Burg” due to the fortress I am going to write about today, which is located directly in the middle of the city. The fortress was built in the year 1077 and nowadays is one of the most important landmarks of Salzburg. Without it our city would look completely different and the atmosphere would not be the same anymore. It was built on the small city mountain called “Mönchsberg”, where people like to go to calm down and relax. From up there, you have a gorgeous view over the whole old town and all its monuments, churches […]

Beethoven Memorial

Ludwig van Beethoven was a german composer and pianist. He remains one of the most recognized and influential musicians of this period (classic and romantic), and is considered to be one of the greatest composers of all time. His exact birth date is not known,  but he was baptized on the 17th of December  1770 in Bonn. He probably inherited his musical talent from his father and grandfather, because both of them already sang in the electory choir. His father was really ambitious and wanted him to become a “wunderkind“. Since the age of 4 he needs to play the piano. He was taught by his father Johann van Beethoven and later on he worked with Christian Gottlob Neefe, a […]

I am addicted to …

I am addicted to do walks among the nature with a breathtaking landscapes. Even if life here goes slowly, I try to spend all my free time very active instead of lie flat on the beach only. I am not good if I miss one weekend without doing any hiking trail. You do something for the first time, and then repeat again and again and that´s how you are addicted then. My first time with THAT drugs was on the first weekend of April. It was first hitchhike-experience (on the Island), viewpoint on Pico do Arieiro, hiking from Porto da Cruz to Machico with the camping on Prainha Beach, then hiking to São Lourenço and hitchhike with very old school […]

Danger! Danger!

A short guide to putting yourself in danger Even though Madeira has, if I’m not mistaken, around 2000 kilometers of levadas, not all the trails are open and not all the trails are safe to explore. This is an important thing to keep in mind. Before going for a hike, you should always check if the levada or vereda you’re about to walk is in good conditions and offers safety. And if somebody says the trail is dangerous – you don’t go. Should be obvious, right? Well, wasn’t for me. So some weeks ago I found this one levada on a map, Levada do Curral do Castelejo. It was marked on the public communication map of Funchal, one they give […]

Madeira: Health SPA

Which of these seems more appealing to you : ´home is where your heart is´ or rather ´home is where the money is? I was born in the Eastern part of Poland, exactly in Lublin City. With its 700-year-long history, picturesque Old Town and 9 universities (public and private) it should attract many young people. So it is, but the problem is that after they graduate from university most of them need to emigrate to find a job either to bigger cities like Warsaw, Cracow or to other European countries. That is one of the reason why after finishing my degree I did not even try to look for job in my hometown – I chose Cracow instead. After one […]

What I missed about Portugal

In spring I did my short-term EVS in Portugal, Palmela. There are some things I realised I’ve been missing. 1) The sun. Okay, so I spent my spring in sunny Portugal, went home for a sunny summer and came here to spend the next 10 months in the sun. Well, now I remember that we don’t actually have sun in Finland, even in summer. At home you have to carry your jacket with you all the time and you don’t have to wear any sun lotion. When I did both of those things here, I noticed that the first one was unnecessary and the second one was a huge mistake. 2) The food.
