A ciência enquanto bem público

Election time

The occasion for a young Italian man to discuss about European unity. In this exact historical moment Italy is facing some troubles on the road to European unity: year by year too many governments have risen to power, each of them ruled by different parties and political figures, sometimes with diametrically opposed ideas about how to deal with Europe and its politics. Now more than ever, it is essential to work towards unity; in a world where the powers become bigger and more centralized there’s no space for fishes that swim alone. Moreover the European dream is not anymore something unavailable and far from our reality, it is slowly happening in front of our eyes, and an initiative such as […]

Flexibilidade curricular e Eurydice

Segundo o próprio relatório Recommended Annual Instruction Time in Full-time Compulsory Education in Europe 2018-2019, porque estas são áreas “obrigatórias com flexibilidade de tempo”. O […]

European Union and the elections

This article is about the importance of the European Union and the next European election. Since I applied for my voluntary service on Madeira I realized how important European connections and projects are to get to learn new languages, cultures and moreover to develop further as a human being, such as a big community. Being part of the European Union makes me aware of many benefits we have because of this interconnectedness. Our possibility to go abroad has changed a lot in the last few years and it is getting easier with every year. As a result of the EU, we have more chances to take part in Erasmus projects or student exchanges than ever before. But being part of […]

Europe for me

Europe doesn’t mean only a couple of countries, it is more than that. Members of the European Parliament are elected every five years and this year in May will be the next election. As a transnational parliament with directly elected members, the European Parliament is unique in the world. The institution represents the interests of the EU citizen at an European level. The Parliament elects the President of the European Commission and appoints the Commissioners (as a college). There is more scepticism in the Netherlands about what Europe is and if it is necessary to be in the European Union. In general the Netherlands are positive about Europe but the well-known migration discussion is still a big deal for some […]

European elections and the future

This year my country celebrates 15 years of being a member of European Union. There were a lot of changes in Poland during that time – in my opinion mostly good ones. And thanks to it I could become an EVS volunteer in Madeira. Being a part of the European Union brought many advantages for young people who can now study or volunteer abroad. My parents didn’t have this opportunity and they are happy that I could go abroad thanks to the Erasmus+ program. In my opinion it’s very important for young people to get to know other cultures, learn languages, meet people from different countries, get experience in new areas. When they learn and get another point of view […]

Liechtenstein and the EU

As you may or may not know Liechtenstein isn‘t actually in the European Union. Together with Norway and Iceland we belong to the European Economic Area. Liechtenstein joined the EEA in 1995, after becoming a full member of the EFTA (European free trade association) in 1991. Joining the EEA, also obliged Liechtenstein to apply some European Union laws because they are considered EEA relevant. There is some further cooperation with the EU via Switzerland as Liechtenstein is highly integrated with the Swiss economy (including using the Swiss francs). There are further agreements between Liechtenstein and the EU, on matters such as the Schengen agreement, taxation for savings and there are ongoing talks on combating fraud and exchanging information on tax matters. […]

Living in a island

Living in a island is wonderful, you have the sea near of your house and a nice weather almost all the year But sometimes it’s not so good … A few days ago I was planning a holiday’s trip, the tickets were very cheap (round-trip from Madrid to France 15€ ) but the problem was that going out of the island costed 300€ the same round-trip, so I felt caught and frustrated. Some days before it I was talking with two friends and one of them (from Lisbon) asked me, wouldn’t you live here for the whole life? And I answered of course not. Well, I recognize it leaving here is quite nice, the people is wonderful, also the food, […]

Souvenirs

Are you going on your vacation or actually you are there, but don’t know what to buy as a souvenir? Come on! It is not so difficult at all, is it? We are different, so our taste as well. For one of us the perfect souvenir is postcard, the others might choose some parts of clothes with logo of hosting city. How the situation looks in the most popular destinations for travelling on the Globe? In London people willingly buy thousands kinds of fridge magnet with images of historical attractions and royals, of course. In Paris the winners are white t-shirt and small pendant, both present the Eiffel Tower. What about Funchal? Which object is the most valuable for our […]

Christmas time

This moment of the year is for me really important and emotional as I am writing this text few days before Christmas. Funchal looks fabulous with all light decorations but I still cannot feel that this time is just about to start. What am I missing? I have never spent these holidays abroad, even taking into account the fact that I had already lived abroad before. Beyond the whole religious aspect, this time is really significant for me as my entire family can be together which is normally not so easy as we live in different places. What I appreciate most in Poland is the festive atmosphere when you look out the window and see that snowy and cold land […]

Christmas is here! Or is it?

Three days until Christmas, and this feels even weirder than I expected. Once again I’m comparing my life here now and my life before this experience. Christmas for me usually means snow, family, lots of candles, snow, dark days and snow. This year I won’t get any of these. Okay, I can arrange the candles myself, but not the other things. I won’t get most of the real Finnish Christmas food, because for cooking them I would need an oven. Not going to cemetery on Christmas Eve to bring candles for those who we miss, not visiting grandparents on Christmas day and seeing all the relatives at the same time in the same house. Not seeing the face of my […]

Funchal

The isolated capital of the pearl of the Atlantic Funchal is, depending on whom you ask either a big or a tiny city. The capital of Madeira counts more or less 112.000 inhabitants and is the largest city of the island. But what is Funchal for me? I have been in Madeira for one and a half month now and had enough time to get the first impression of its landscape and also its capital Funchal. When I arrived here I thought that Funchal has everything one could wish for. And that is right… at least when you are a tourist. Here, you can find a bunch of souvenir shops, a lot of cafes and restaurants and a mass of […]

Hiking in Porto Santo

Golden Island is not only the beach! We’ve been told by a number of people that the best time to visit Porto Santo is early Autumn, when the weather is still great but as it’s no longer the high season, the place is more calm and relaxed. Peace and quiet was exactly what we needed, so in the middle of October, after months of waiting for the right moment, we finally got ourselves our tickets to the Golden Island. I imagine most of the people head to Porto Santo with that spectacular 9 km long sandy beach in mind, but I was never too much of a beach person. All my attention and all my curiosity was with the hills […]
