No esclarecimento […]

Christmas Eve around the table

Like in most Central European countries, Christmas in Poland is a quaint and much-beloved affair. Most of the Polish Christmas celebrations take place on 24th December, and even though the day isn’t an official public holiday in Poland, to many Poles it is one of the most significant and family-oriented dates in the calendar. Many institutions stop working earlier than usual on the day of Christmas Eve, which is usually celebrated with a family dinner at home. Many Poles wait until the first star appears in the sky before sitting down to eat on 24th December. This tradition commemorates the Star of Bethlehem, which according to the New Testament guided the Wise Men to the birthplace of Christ. Nowadays, with […]

Viriato e Lusitânia no Espaço

Christmas time in Germany

From “Nikolaus” to “Christkind” – who brings the presents? A long time ago, Saint Nicholas presented the children with gifts every year on the 6th of December. This act was a Catholic veneration of saints. Protestants, however, did not believe in this and so – probably even the reformer Martin Luther made sure that the distribution of presents was postponed to the 24th of December. From this point, Jesus alias the “Holy Christian” brought the gifts. This finally became the German “Christkind”. Despite this, up to now, “Nikolaus” brings small presents to the children, on the 6th of December. They have to put their clean shoes in front of their door and will find some presents in them, the next […]

The smell of fresh Christmas cookies and streets decorated with beautiful fairy lights everywhere! Austria can be a Christmas paradise, because if you’re lucky enough it will be covered in a thick layer of snow and long before the 24th December, when the main celebration takes place, the whole country is in Christmas mood. It usually all starts at the beginning of December, as that’s when the Christmas markets start and the streets are enlightened with fairy lights – so all the towns start looking Christmassy. In this time people like coming together at the Christmas markets to drink mulled wine or meet up at someone’s home and enjoy some homemade Christmas cookies. The most famous ones are called “Vanillekipferl”, […]

Christmas in Liechtenstein

Going to church on Christmas or spending more time with the family? This is in our country very different. Christmas means general spending time with the family in our country. It depends on how religious you and your family are and which religion they have. In our catholic family, it is a tradition to go to the mass on the 24th of December. With this event, we celebrate the birth of Jesus and afterward, we can do our own family traditions. On Christmas Eve, we always eat a lot and enjoy the moment where we all are together. We eat something special that we are not eating every day. Because we are a few vegetarians in our family, our dinner […]

Alvar Aalto

He did some really nice pieces of art. We were supposed to write about a painter from our own countries. But to be honest, in Finland, we don’t have any painters who would be really impressive for me or either known world-wide. So I decided to write about Alvar Aalto, an architect and a designer I personally like. Alvar Aalto was born in the 3rd of February 1898 in Kuortane. In 1921 he graduated from Helsinki’s technical academy. During his time in the academy, he took part in the civil war in Finland. After graduating he moved away from the capital city, to Jyväskylä. There he made his own architect office, following the Scandinavian design, which was popular at that time. […]

Karel Appel

The paintings look (a little bit) like child drawings. This man is an internationally renowned Dutch painter, whose paintings look (at least according to critics) like they were painted by a child himself. Also, Karel stated: ´I just mess up something´. Others say this was not completely true, they say there was a big theory behind the paintings. Christiaan Karel Appel was born in 1921 in Amsterdam, he studied there at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. At the academy, he met two other artists with who he became close friends, Corneille and Constant. With these friends and a few others, he founded Cobra in 1948 at an international conference in Paris. This was an international movement of painters and […]

The master among Dutch painters in the Dutch Golden Age. Rembrandt Hamerszoon van Rijn was a Dutch painter, etcher, drawer and art collector. He is considered as one of the greatest painters in European art. Besides, he is the most important Dutch painter of the 17th century. This century is also known as the Dutch Golden Age because Dutch art was one of the most acclaimed in the world in that time. Rembrandt manufactured approximately 300 paintings, 300 etchings and 2000 drawings. These works belong to the Baroque style and were influenced by the Caravaggesque style. Both styles find their origin in Italy and are related to strong emotional expressions and extravagancy even though he has never been to Italy. […]
