Poland during celebrations

How to Polish people celebrate Christmas, Carnival, and Easter There are many traditions of Christmas and Easter in Poland but just a few around Carnival. The greatest number of Christmas traditions concern Christmas Eve. According to tradition, on the table should be twelve dishes, where the only kind of meat is fish. Everyone around the table should try all of the dishes. The most typical dish is carp which can be served in various versions, usually fried. Other traditional dishes are beetroot soup with ravioli, herring in sour cream, poppy seed cake or sauerkraut with mushrooms. Typically one place setting should be left free for an unexpected guest which symbolizes every hungry or alone person who spends Christmas without family […]

Licenciatura desvaloriza 22,8%

Traditions in France

Christmas and Easter in France. The main celebration of Christmas in France is on the evening of the 24th of December. This is also on the eve that the presents are offered. Most of the time, it is simply a long family dinner which lasts until the early morning of the 25th. It begins as a basic aperitif with champagne and white wine. After we eat some seafood, that is called foie gras, then a trou Normand is served. It is made of vanilla ice cream and calva. In the part of France from which I am from, the biggest Carnival is the one of Dunkerque. It takes place from January to March. Nevertheless, the main and noisiest part of […]

Traditions in The Netherlands

The traditions are getting more and more commercialized. People from the Netherlands are proud of their traditions but most of all it is just about earning money In general, we really don’t celebrate Christmas as a big tradition in the Netherlands. Of course, we decorate our houses and city streets with a lot of lights. And most of the people do also have a nice Christmas tree at home and spend Christmas dinner together, but that’s all. No presents underneath the Christmas tree or the belief in Santa Claus. Carnival is quite big in the Netherlands and especially in the southern provinces. The names of the cities change to some funny traditional names. Through the whole year, people prepare the […]

Diagnostico do Alzheimer

Lots of traditions in Austria

Carnival donuts, “Osterbock” and Christmas cookies In Austria, we have lots of traditions throughout the year and for every festivity, there’s a special kind of food. We love to get together and have delicious meals. From the first day of carnival (the 11th of November) onwards, you can buy our delicious carnival donuts called “Faschingskrapfen” at the bakeries and in supermarkets. Round pieces of dough, pretty similar to donuts without a hole, that are fried in oil, filled with apricot jam and covered with powdered sugar. We serve them at the carnival parties or parades, where they give them out to the best costumes. The next big traditional festival we have is Easter. It’s especially the week before Easter Sunday […]

Understanding Chaucer

The life and work of Geoffrey Chaucer, and understanding the contradictory nature of his writing. Before there was Shakespeare, Geoffrey Chaucer was considered the father of English literature. Born in 1343, Chaucer was a prominent member of the royal courts of both Edward III and Richard II, however, he was most well known for his writing, with his most celebrated work being The Canterbury Tales. Chaucer began writing fiction in the late 1360s and pioneered in a new literary style. He introduced a new poetic structure, more similar to the European style than his Anglo-Saxon predecessors. This was presumably inspired by his time in France, where he was a prisoner of war, and this style went on to inspire Shakespeare’s […]

King Manuel I, a King of Portugal

He played an important role in the expansion of the Power of Portugal Hey guys! After telling you my first impressions about the Island, then about food, and last time about a little bit of Flora and Fauna, in this article we will talk about History, and one of the Kings of Portugal. So let’s speak about King Manuel I, a King of Portugal between 1495 (when he received the Crown in Lisbon) and 1521. He was born on 31st of May 1469 in Alcochete (Portugal, facing Lisbon on the East) and died in Lisbon in December 1521. Son of Ferdinand, a little brother of King Afonso V (King between 1438 and 1481), Manuel succeeded to his cousin John II […]

King Dom Carlos

He became king in 1889 which was a time of crisis. Dom Carlos might have not been the last king on the throne of Portugal and the Algarve but his rule is often associated with the end of the monarchy. The image of the Portuguese monarchy was severely damaged after the government showed weakness facing the British. From today’s view, you might say that Dom Carlos had no great talent in politics, as he is still blamed for the end of the Portuguese monarchy. It did not make it easier to seem like a confident king. Instead, the population noticed quite fast that he could not stand its ground against the British Empire. Portugal’s plan was to have sovereignty over […]

King Manuel I of Portugal

The period of his reign was one of the finest times in the history of Portugal. Walking around Funchal you could have came across a square called “Largo Dom Manuel I” (eng. “Square of King Manuel I”) which is located near Sé Cathedral or you could have heard about an architectural style called ‘mannueline’ visible in many buildings in the city. All this reminds us of the times of reign of one of the most famous kings of Portugal, Manuel I also known as the Fortunate (port. o Afortunado) had as the period of his reign 1495-1521. During this time Funchal received city rights (1508) and became an important commercial port in the map of the world. We can even […]

King Sebastian of Portugal

Probably one of the most famous kings in Portuguese history. King Sebastian of Portugal (20 January 1554 – 4 August 1578) is very popular amongst us volunteers so that it took me a little discussion so that I am finally the one who writes about “the desired”. But why is he so famous? Was it because he invited the Jesuit order in 1569 to the island of Madeira after a huge French privateer attack in 1566 where French soldiers robbed and plundered the archipelago? Or because he was the youngest king Portugal ever had, who became king with just 3 years because his father Prince John died before he was born, his mother Joanna of Spain returned shortly after his […]

D. Maria I – The crazy Queen

D.Maria I was very religious and got completely crazy during her lifetime. Maria Francisca Isabel Josefa Antónia Gertrudes Rita Joana (Maria I) was the daughter of José I de Portugal and Mariana Victoria of Spain. Maria was born in 1734 and grew up with her sisters at the court in Lisbon. They seemed to have a good life, they were loved by their father and they did a lot of things, like riding horses, learning to draw and read French and Latin. But things happened in Maria´s lifetime that slowly drove her crazy. For example the earthquake in Lisbon, which killed thousands of people. She had to marry her uncle (at the age of 17) and apart from that she […]
