Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born in 1864 near Toulouse (Albi) in the South of France. He was from an aristocratic family. As he was very young, it appeared that Toulouse was suffering from a congenital illness due to his parents being closely related genetically. In such a wealthy family it was very common to marry between first cousins in order to protect the patrimony. This illness known as Pycnodysostosis (nowadays commonly called Toulouse-Lautrec syndrome) weakened his bones. Because of two serious horse-riding accidents, his legs stopped growing, letting him for the rest of his life with the legs of a child. Aventuras no mundo do Unicode

Trabalho do Instituto Ricardo Jorge revela efeitos anticancerígenos do medicamento anti-inflamatório. The italian Genius

Leonardo da Vinci is one of the main reasons why I am proud of being Italian. He was a world-class artist due to his predisposition for arts and sciences and for the results achieved in both artistic and scientific fields thanks to his ingenuity and talent. He was borned in 1452 and he started his career in a famous artistic Emporium in Florence where he could train his natural skills in painting activities and in sculpturing. His talent was rapidly recognised by the noble and powerful family of Medici, which attract the artist to his court and start commissioning some of his paintings. After that period, Leonardo was sent to Milan where he discovered a stimulating context that allowed him […]

Head in the clouds

Today you’ll learn about René Magritte, the famous Flemish surrealistic painter.  Because there are already numerous biographies out there and Google provides us so kindly with quite a complete overview in his life and oeuvre, I’ll try to approach him from a different angle. Even for the people who aren’t really actively roaming in the art scene, the image of a pipe with the description ‘ceci n’est pas une pipe’ (French for ‘this is not a pipe) must ring a bell. Or perhaps you have seen the applefaced guy with his bowler hat around? These frequently used images belong to the common visual knowledge, thanks to the many channels they’ve been exposed through. It could be you’ve been hiding from […]

Meet Vaduz, Liechtenstein

Vaduz is the capital city of Liechtenstein, a small country between Austria and Switzerland and also my home. Liechtenstein is a very small country so its cities are also very small. Liechtenstein has almost 38000 inhabitants and the whole country has only 160km². Although Vaduz is the capital city, it is not the city with the greatest number of inhabitants. Schaan, the city next to Vaduz has more inhabitants. Vaduz has many beautiful spots even though it is very small compared to other cities. Vaduz is the city with the castle in which the Prince lives with his family. Underneath the castle is the “Städtle”, the city center with shops and the government building.
