Francis Bacon

Francis Bacon in my opinion is one of the greatest painters ever to put brush to canvas. His work would completely shock, scare and amaze those who would gaze upon it. His work would be etched upon the British consciousness after the Second World War. Coming out of the horrific and devastating war, Bacon’s paintings would reflect not only his consciousness but he would tap into the dark and unnerving subconscious of the people. He was an Englishman who was brought up in Ireland during in his formative years. His childhood was a very tough and harrowing one,  he suffered from severe asthma and that meant he was a recluse and very shy. Additionally, growing up with a strict protestant […]

Caspar David Friedrich

Caspar David Friedrich, born on the 5th of September 1774, was a German Romantic landscape painter of the 19th century and is, nowadays, regarded as the most important German artist of his generation. His best-known paintings consist of allegorical landscapes, featuring contemplative figures, silhouettes against night skies, fog, barren trees, as well as Gothic ruins. His chosen subjects prove his interest in the contemplation of nature and his emotional approach towards nature. This approach was highly influenced by the social current in his time, a society which grew disillusioned to the materialism of past generations and sought sense in the focus of spirituality, expressed through images of the natural, “divine” world. While Friedrich’s master pieces brought him great renown early […]

Desmascarado mecanismo do cancro

Pioneer in a world of abstract art

Using simple elements like horizontal and vertical lines and primary colours Piet Mondrian created pieces that have been discussed by many people. Even though his last works are abstract, he has not always been an abstract painter. His arts career started shortly after primary school. From this moment he started taking art classes and had many different teachers. After failing a qualification test for an arts school because of the subject ‘anatomy’, Mondrian started to focus on the painting of landscapes. In the following years his painting style was influenced by other painters like Van Gogh and Matisse. His style shifted from realistic to more expressive, his lines became harsher and colours more dramatic. This change in style became even […]

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born in 1864 near Toulouse (Albi) in the South of France. He was from an aristocratic family. As he was very young, it appeared that Toulouse was suffering from a congenital illness due to his parents being closely related genetically. In such a wealthy family it was very common to marry between first cousins in order to protect the patrimony. This illness known as Pycnodysostosis (nowadays commonly called Toulouse-Lautrec syndrome) weakened his bones. Because of two serious horse-riding accidents, his legs stopped growing, letting him for the rest of his life with the legs of a child. Unable to pursue his original equestrian passion, he started to take art lessons. At the time of his arrival […]

Aventuras no mundo do Unicode

Trabalho do Instituto Ricardo Jorge revela efeitos anticancerígenos do medicamento anti-inflamatório.

Embracing a city

When I think about Amsterdam, I think about the sensory experiences of the city. The sound of tourists’ suitcases rolling over cobblestones, the penetrating smell when you pass a coffee shop in one of the alleyways or the rain on your skin when you’re cycling to the other side of town. I think about crowded cafes when our football team plays. How whole streets turn orange, our national color, and the excitement on people’s faces. How people cheer when our team scores and how the cafes turn to silent mumbling and cursing when the other team scores. How you can’t get out of these places without having had a beer shower or being hugged by random strangers when the orange […]

A small Dutch village

Smell the freshly cut grass, look at the swallows and make a trip on the tractor. Kolderveen is an extremely small village where you can find a lot of cows, horses, tourists and many seniors on electric bicycles. Literally, Kolderveen consists of only one street which is almost 2,5 km long. I think with around 200 inhabitants there live many more cows and horses then people. The Netherlands has twelve provinces, Kolderveen belongs to the province Drenthe which lies in the north of the Netherlands. Three of the provinces , included Drenthe, in the north of the Netherlands are well known because of the meadows, farms and sober people compared with the environment of the four biggest cities called the […]

More cows than people

A hidden region between some alpine mountains. On first sight, the Bregenzerwald may seem a bit boring, but well, it isn’t. We got so much more to offer than just cows and cheese, although these are deeply connected to our cultural life. This article should be about my ‘hometown’ and yes, Alberschwende is my ‘hometown’, but it’s actually a small village, inside the Bregenzerwald region, with about 3.300 people living there. Even though I’m not really the biggest fan of Alberschwende there are a few things worth mentioning. The most popular thing of ours may be the ‘KulturKäsKlatsch'”, which could be translated into ‘CultureCheeseClub’. The ‘KäsKlatsch’ takes place every Thursday next to our church. By the way, right behind the […]

My hometown, Vaduz

The capital city of a small country in the heart of Europe. My hometown is called Vaduz and it’s the capital city of Liechtenstein. Liechtenstein has about 38.000 inhabitants and in Vaduz live about 5.500 people. It’s also the town where the royal family of Liechtenstein lives. The royal family lives in the castle, which is located in the city center of Vaduz, although it’s located a little higher than the rest of the houses. We do also have 3 museums in Vaduz: the historical museum, the Hilti art foundation, and the art museum. The art museum and the Hilti art foundation contain a lot of artworks which belong to the royal family of Liechtenstein. There’s also a city train […]

Bonn, a city for everyone

A city for everyone no matter if you like celebrating or relaxing. Hello everyone and kind regards from Madeira, my name is Anne Schroeder and at the moment I’m staying in Madeira to do a voluntary service. Before I came to Madeira I lived in Bonn, which is a city in Germany that I’ll try to present to you through this text. Perhaps you have already heard of Bonn since it is one of the oldest cities in Germany and it was the capital of Germany from 1949 -1990. Although nowadays Berlin is the capital of Germany, Bonn is a big city which has around 322.125 inhabitants and many places to discover. First, there is a beautiful shopping street in the […]

Barcelona, my home city

Barcelona, attractive for everyone I am a city girl. I have lived all my life in the heart of Barcelona, watching the Sagrada Familia from my window and born in one of the most beautiful Art Nouveau buildings in the city, Sant Pau hospital. In Barcelona you can find art and history along with modernity and diversification. In the city you can stroll through modern neighborhoods, such as Poble Nou, full of new construction. On the top of that, the historic centre of Barcelona is a beautiful medieval area: the Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic). Full of streets with interesting details, squares with history and famous churches. The geographical area, the food and the climate of Barcelona are some of the […]
