Vatnsberinn

A monument to Iceland’s working women Vatnsberinn [‘The Water Carrier’] is a modernist statue located in downtown Reykjavík. It is the work of Ásmundur Sveinsson, completed during winter 1936-1937 while the artist was a resident in Copenhagen, Denmark. Ásmundur (1893-1982) was a pioneering sculptor from Kolsstaðir, in the west of Iceland. His workshop and house form part of the Reykjavík Art Museum today. The monument is an ode to Ásmundur’s childhood in rural Iceland, where he witnessed the women there carrying large pales of water to their homes day in, day out. At the turn of the twentieth century, Iceland was an almost entirely rural country, only just witnessing the beginnings of urban and industrial development. In the first half […]

Tartarugas e o cheiro do plástico

Berlin’s Symbol of Unity

The Brandenburg Gate is one of the most important monuments in today’s Berlin with over two hundred years of history. Throughout its existence, it has been often a site for major historical events. Currently, this 18th-century neoclassical monument is considered as a symbol of turbulent German history as well as European unity and peace.  The building is located in the western part of the city and it faces Pariser Platz, regarded as one of the city’s most attractive squares. It is the entry to Unter den Linden, the renowned boulevard of linden trees, which led directly to the royal City Palace. It was designed by the German artist Carl Gotthard Langhans and was built from 1788 to 1791. It was […]

Festung Hohensalzburg

The name of my hometown “Salzburg” originates from two different events. “Salz” because of the highly relevant salt trade hundreds of years ago, and “Burg” due to the fortress I am going to write about today, which is located directly in the middle of the city. The fortress was built in the year 1077 and nowadays is one of the most important landmarks of Salzburg. Without it our city would look completely different and the atmosphere would not be the same anymore. It was built on the small city mountain called “Mönchsberg”, where people like to go to calm down and relax. From up there, you have a gorgeous view over the whole old town and all its monuments, churches […]

Beethoven Memorial

Ludwig van Beethoven was a german composer and pianist. He remains one of the most recognized and influential musicians of this period (classic and romantic), and is considered to be one of the greatest composers of all time. His exact birth date is not known,  but he was baptized on the 17th of December  1770 in Bonn. He probably inherited his musical talent from his father and grandfather, because both of them already sang in the electory choir. His father was really ambitious and wanted him to become a “wunderkind“. Since the age of 4 he needs to play the piano. He was taught by his father Johann van Beethoven and later on he worked with Christian Gottlob Neefe, a […]

Burg Gutenberg

An ancient castle from another time Gutenberg Castle (Burg Gutenberg) is a preserved castle in the town of Balzers (southern-most town of Liechtenstein). Gutenberg is one of the five castles of the principality and one of two that have survived preserved until the present day. Unlike Vaduz Castle in Vaduz, Gutenberg Castle does not serve as a residence of the princely family of Liechtenstein and is open to the general public as a museum. The castle lies on a hill near the center of Balzers and is accessible via a street and road known as “Burgweg“. Gutenberg Castle initially was being constructed as a medieval church and cemetery on a hilltop. In the early 12th century, the cemetery was canceled […]

COVID-19 fez diminuir a poluição

An ocean of differences?

Funchal and Warsaw – the list of similarities between both places. Funchal and my home city are so distant, however, what are their similarities? In this united Europe, what do our cities share in this Union of, so far, 28 countries? What comes to my mind are mostly differences. In terms of the number of citizens, area, architecture and landscape that surrounds both cities. But where I see the biggest difference is climate. In Warsaw and generally Poland, weather is quite unpredictable. During summer days there might be an average of thirty-five degrees plus. On the other hand, sometimes in winter, the thermometer can show minus twenty-five degrees Celsius. While Madeiran temperatures are more stable throughout the year. Secondly, I […]

So far and so close

When I arrived in Funchal, It felt like home. I arrived in Funchal short time ago, so it’s a bit difficult for me to talk about similarities when I hardly know the idiosyncrasies of Madeiran people. However, I must say that I immediately felt at home. I come from San Sebastian, a city in the Basque Country, in the north of Spain, but I am a French resident since 2012. When I arrived in Funchal, I had the feeling of being in a known place, even though I had never been here. The people are friendly and warm and they immediately treat you as if they knew you. I think one of the biggest similarities with my hometown, is that […]

Cultural Capitals

Kraków, considered by many the cultural capital of the country. It was named (by the EU) the European Capital of Culture for the year 2000. The city has several famous theaters and many interesting museums. The charming Old Town with an unique Main Square and the iconic gothic St Mary’s Basilica attracts thousands of tourists. As well as this, the Old Jewish Quarter and its nonroutine bars and exquisite restaurants are a sight to behold. You can easily find diverse pieces of art in some small exhibitions directly in the streets. The significant number of art houses provides access to the independent and sophisticated cinema. A great many music festivals take place here, from traditional to modern and alternative sounds. […]

From Poland to Funchal

It’s hard to believe that my locality and Funchal have anything in common. The place where I come from is located in the center of Poland. It is a peaceful countryside where days pass slowly. There is neither a river or lake. Unlike Funchal, which is surrounded by waves of the Atlantic Ocean. No doubt Funchal and whole Madeira have unbelievably varied and beautiful flora. Much more diversified than flora in my countryside. Nevertheless, forests remind me my countryside. Especially during the Levada walks I have that familiar feeling of peace and relaxation. Another similarity is the hospitality of local people. Their kindness and willingness to help others bring to my mind my family and friends who wish me well. […]

Unknown Similarities

Unknown similarities found even in distant and most different places. How to compare two places that appear to be so completely different at first glance? Funchal, the thriving southern metropolis and my small home village Husen, a part of western Germany, totally unknown to 99% of the world’s population. My village consists of round about 1,000 people, a stark contrast to the population of Funchal with its over 110,000 inhabitants. And even if we take a look at the two cities my village belongs to, Lichtenau and Paderborn, there do not seem to be that many similarities. The most obvious connection might be the big Portuguese community in Paderborn, which offers Fado concerts, as well as Portuguese language and cooking […]

Differences: Kajaani and Funchal

There is still one significant similarity. European Union. Today’s temperature in Funchal is 25 degrees. In my home city, Kajaani, it is 5 degrees. Here in Funchal, we have palm trees, sand, flowers, and an ocean. In Kajaani, we have grass, birch trees, and lakes. By night streets of Funchal are full of people. By night in Kajaani, there are no people on the streets, and actually not necessarily in days. My name is Anni Ruskela and I am from Kajaani, Finland. Currently, I live here in Funchal, Madeira. I am going to stay here for seven months. It already feels like I have been here many months. Funchal is already my second home; all these streets that I am […]
