Christmas in Liechtenstein

Going to church on Christmas or spending more time with the family? This is in our country very different. Christmas means general spending time with the family in our country. It depends on how religious you and your family are and which religion they have. In our catholic family, it is a tradition to go to the mass on the 24th of December. With this event, we celebrate the birth of Jesus and afterward, we can do our own family traditions. On Christmas Eve, we always eat a lot and enjoy the moment where we all are together. We eat something special that we are not eating every day. Because we are a few vegetarians in our family, our dinner […]

‘De Hamse Wuiten’- The Legend

Now I’ll take you on a trip to the very root of my hometown, to the time when it almost sprouted freshly from the ground.  It was in the riverbanks of the calm river ‘Durme’, in the middle of Flanders, the people of Hamme found their habitat. Most of them where humble farmers, who thrived on the rich soil the shore provided.  One farmer, in particular, Kamiel, was a friend to everything that was covered in fur and feathers. Even the wildwood creatures, otherwise so shy, came to his call. They ate from his hand and even lay at his feet. The sun shone brightly on the day this marvelous little colored Flemish Jay landed on his shoulder. The two […]

The legend of the loch ness monster

The most famous Scottish Cryptid, the Loch Ness Monster. A man stands on the banks of the great loch, the sky is dark and the fog is rolling in. Something stirs in the water, he squints but he cannot see it clearly. Then suddenly he sees it, a creature peeking above the water, a creature or perhaps a beast? No, a monster. The Loch Ness Monster. Loch Ness is the second largest and deepest lochs (lakes) in the country, the water is dark and murky due to the high levels of peat in the area. This, combined with the bad weather frequently experienced in the Highlands of Scotland, makes this the perfect lake for sightings of a cryptid or mythical […]

Easter in Poland

This celebration involves many unique and joyful rituals, including plenty of homemade delicacies. The first sign of approaching Easter is a large number of branches and dried flowers being brought to the church. One week before Easter, Palm Sunday takes place (according to Catholic tradition, the day marks Jesus’s entry into Jerusalem). Since palm trees are rare in Poland, churchgoers often bring ‘palms’ made of colorful woven dried branches. On the Saturday before Easter Sunday, Poles paint hard-boiled eggs (called pisanki). Some use store-bought kits which make the coloring and decorating easier, others continue to make dyes in the traditional way – with boiled onion skins. Another Saturday activity is the preparation of Easter baskets: lined with a white lace […]

Casimir III the Great

The King of Poland from 1333 to 1370. He was the last Polish king from the Piast dynasty, born on 30 April 1310 in Kowal, died on 5 November 1370 in Kraków. He was the youngest, third son of King Wladyslaw I (“the Elbow-high”) and Duchess Jadwiga of Kalisz. When Casimir attained the throne in 1333, his position was in danger, as his neighbors did not recognize his title. The Polish kingdom was depopulated and exhausted by the war, and the economy was ruined. Thanks to Casimir the kingdom became prosperous and wealthy, with great prospects for the future. He waged many victorious wars and doubled the size of the kingdom, mostly through the addition of lands in modern-day Ukraine. […]

Reforestation Activity

Reforestation Activity shared with you by our European volunteers! Gratifying experience On the first of December 2018, several volunteers took part in a reforestation project in our local Parque Ecológico. In the beginning, we were given a short introduction and learned of the variety and numerous species residing in the ecological park. Moreover, we learned of the devastating wildfires, which were the reason for our activity. Shortly afterwards, we were allowed to start planting young trees under the supervision of an experienced park ranger. This planting task was very enjoyable, as we were able to combine enjoying a beautiful scenery with the fulfilling sense of being able to take part in something long-lasting and ecologically important.
