Flea market at Mauerpark

There are actually plenty of things, you could do in Germany. But one thing I can really highly recommend is traveling to Berlin and joining the flea market at the so-called park of the wall: “Flohmarkt im Mauerpark“. At that flea market, you can certainly find a lot of clothes, shoes and ancient stuff. But there are also some local modern artists selling there work or drawing and writing right in that moment in front of you. Just around the next corner of the market, you will find the food area. A huge quantity of different food trucks is lined up at this point. There are trucks selling Falafel, Sushi, KImchi, Kebab, Burger, Fish, Sausages, Pizza…practically everything you can imagine. […]

Prolongamento do ano lectivo no ES

Summertime in the alps

Let’s go on a virtual journey through Austria: by train, we can travel to some of the most beautiful places!  Starting our journey in the capital Vienna. This city has a lot to offer, not only in summer but all throughout the year. Strolling through the “1st district” of the city, along with the beautiful buildings and relaxing in one of the several parks. The following days we visit the Schönbrunn Palace with its garden and the zoo, the Prater, a funfare, and some museums, to then continue our trip westward. We arrive in Salzburg and have a quick stop there, where we enjoy the city of Mozart at the river Salzach and climb some of the near mountains. Continuing […]

Dia do estudante

Summer in France

Let me talk about Bretagne. This region is located in the north-west part of France, just in front of the Atlantic Ocean and the Manche. It is basically the only place in France where the summer heat is still bearable nowadays. The landscapes are amazing: promenade along the sea, feet on the sand but also the countryside with beautiful vegetation and forests. You can also discover the typical houses in this region, all-white or in stones with slates roof. If you like history and magic, I advise you to walk in the Brocéliande forest. Every kid in France knows it thanks to the stories about King Arthur, the knights of the round table and Merlin the enchanter. If you prefer […]

COVID-19 e o ambiente

A Summer in Iceland

If you find yourself in Iceland during the summer months, you will be spoilt for choice as there are plenty of activities available, helped by the extended daylight hours. After the long, dark nights of the winter, Icelanders look forward to the summer and make the most of the opportunity to spend time with family and friends in the great outdoors.  There are no shortage of festivities for you to take part in during this time of year. Independence Day, on 17th of June, is a nationwide celebration. A 17th June party is also around the time when Icelanders might dust off their old barbecues, and serve up some of their famous hot dogs, SS Pylsur.  Mid- to late-June is […]

Vatnsberinn

A monument to Iceland’s working women Vatnsberinn [‘The Water Carrier’] is a modernist statue located in downtown Reykjavík. It is the work of Ásmundur Sveinsson, completed during winter 1936-1937 while the artist was a resident in Copenhagen, Denmark. Ásmundur (1893-1982) was a pioneering sculptor from Kolsstaðir, in the west of Iceland. His workshop and house form part of the Reykjavík Art Museum today. The monument is an ode to Ásmundur’s childhood in rural Iceland, where he witnessed the women there carrying large pales of water to their homes day in, day out. At the turn of the twentieth century, Iceland was an almost entirely rural country, only just witnessing the beginnings of urban and industrial development. In the first half […]

Magnús Þór Jónsson

Megas – The father of Icelandic rock ‘n’ roll Magnús Þór Jónsson – better known by his stage name Megas – is one of the best-known and longest-standing Icelandic musicians. Megas was born in Reykjavík on 7. April 1945, which makes him almost the same age as the Icelandic republic (founded in 1944). The mononym Megas was adopted by Magnús while he was a student writing his first short stories for the national newspaper. Elvis Presley was an early influence of Megas’, but his musical style and lyricism also took cues from the folk music of Bob Dylan. Megas’ work was highly original in that he satirized Iceland’s medieval sagas, for centuries considered the crowning jewel of Icelandic literary culture. Icelandic […]

Iceland’s strongman

The strongman, Jón Páll Sigmarsson, changed Iceland’s athletic standing on the world stage forever. The 1980s were a defining time for Icelandic sport. It was during this decade that the Icelander Jón Páll Sigmarsson secured his international reputation as a legendary strongman, weightlifter, and bodybuilder. Thanks to the combination of his superhuman athletic abilities and his charismatic on-screen personality, Jón Páll won the hearts of not only Icelanders but people around the world, who tuned in to see him win the World’s Strongest Man four times (in 1984, 1986, 1988 and 1990) and quip his catchy slogans such as: “Þetta er ekkert mál fyrir Jón Pál! [This is no haul for John Paul!]”, delivered just before a deadlift. Jón Páll […]
