Flea market at Mauerpark

There are actually plenty of things, you could do in Germany. But one thing I can really highly recommend is traveling to Berlin and joining the flea market at the so-called park of the wall: “Flohmarkt im Mauerpark“. At that flea market, you can certainly find a lot of clothes, shoes and ancient stuff. But there are also some local modern artists selling there work or drawing and writing right in that moment in front of you. Just around the next corner of the market, you will find the food area. A huge quantity of different food trucks is lined up at this point. There are trucks selling Falafel, Sushi, KImchi, Kebab, Burger, Fish, Sausages, Pizza…practically everything you can imagine. […]

Sailing in Mazurian Lakes

Visit the sailing capital of Poland and commence your journey into the wild on board of a chartered sailing boat, motorboat or yacht. A one- or two-day lasting trip is virtually for everyone, regardless of their age or sailing skills. Breath in the fresh air and sightsee the historic towns of Masuria! With a spare day or two while in Poland, it is a great opportunity for many to combine their interest in history with an active way of spending their time. Upon arrival to Masuria (the Eastern- and Northernmost region of Poland, reachable by high-speed railway services), you may either hire a boat directly (after having completed a few-hour lasting training session) or have your cruise operated by a […]

Prolongamento do ano lectivo no ES

Summertime in the alps

Let’s go on a virtual journey through Austria: by train, we can travel to some of the most beautiful places!  Starting our journey in the capital Vienna. This city has a lot to offer, not only in summer but all throughout the year. Strolling through the “1st district” of the city, along with the beautiful buildings and relaxing in one of the several parks. The following days we visit the Schönbrunn Palace with its garden and the zoo, the Prater, a funfare, and some museums, to then continue our trip westward. We arrive in Salzburg and have a quick stop there, where we enjoy the city of Mozart at the river Salzach and climb some of the near mountains. Continuing […]

Dia do estudante

Summer in France

Let me talk about Bretagne. This region is located in the north-west part of France, just in front of the Atlantic Ocean and the Manche. It is basically the only place in France where the summer heat is still bearable nowadays. The landscapes are amazing: promenade along the sea, feet on the sand but also the countryside with beautiful vegetation and forests. You can also discover the typical houses in this region, all-white or in stones with slates roof. If you like history and magic, I advise you to walk in the Brocéliande forest. Every kid in France knows it thanks to the stories about King Arthur, the knights of the round table and Merlin the enchanter. If you prefer […]

COVID-19 e o ambiente

A Summer in Iceland

If you find yourself in Iceland during the summer months, you will be spoilt for choice as there are plenty of activities available, helped by the extended daylight hours. After the long, dark nights of the winter, Icelanders look forward to the summer and make the most of the opportunity to spend time with family and friends in the great outdoors.  There are no shortage of festivities for you to take part in during this time of year. Independence Day, on 17th of June, is a nationwide celebration. A 17th June party is also around the time when Icelanders might dust off their old barbecues, and serve up some of their famous hot dogs, SS Pylsur.  Mid- to late-June is […]

Jan Matejko

Jan Matejko is probably the most known Polish painter. He born in 1838 in Krakow and he specialized in historical and battle paintings. One of his most famous canvas is “The Battle of Grunwald”, painted in 1872–1878. It represents a really important event in Polish history, the victory of the allied Crown of the Kingdom of Poland and Grand Duchy of Lithuania over the Teutonic Order in 1410. It is displayed in the National Museum in Warsaw. His other famous paintings which we can find there are: “Stańczyk” and “The Prussian Homage”, among others. The art of Open Doors

We cannot pass without admiration for the art in Santa Maria street. More specifically, this project concerns around 200 painted doors which transformed this historic part of the city in open and permanent art gallery. This idea of painting doors emerged in 2010 and it was a result of cooperation between José Maria Zyberchema and João Carlos Abreu, the former Regional Secretary for Economy, Tourism and Culture, the Funchal Municipal Council and two private companies. The project was presented for the first time in an event called PechaKucha by José Maria Montero. After that, on April 2011, in the street of Santa Maria at number 77 the first door was painted by the artist Mark Milewski. It looks like a […]

King Manuel I of Portugal

The period of his reign was one of the finest times in the history of Portugal. Walking around Funchal you could have came across a square called “Largo Dom Manuel I” (eng. “Square of King Manuel I”) which is located near Sé Cathedral or you could have heard about an architectural style called ‘mannueline’ visible in many buildings in the city. All this reminds us of the times of reign of one of the most famous kings of Portugal, Manuel I also known as the Fortunate (port. o Afortunado) had as the period of his reign 1495-1521. During this time Funchal received city rights (1508) and became an important commercial port in the map of the world. We can even […]

We are all one big family

You can learn a lot about different cultures, traditional cuisine and how to rid yourself of stereotypes. Living in a student residence can be annoying, especially when it is overloaded with people or for example the kitchen on the ground floor does not work and all students start to use the one on your floor. But despite all the noise, lack of privacy and a rare state of cleanliness in the kitchen I really appreciate my experience of living in our volunteer and student community. We can always share our experiences and learn from each other and count on each other. On one hand you become more social and open-minded but on the other hand you learn how to enjoy […]

Claustrophobia

I never thought that being and living on the island can be so different from living in the mainland in a bigger agglomeration. But actually it differs a lot and I felt it soon after I came here. This strange feeling of being locked and kept in a small island so that you cannot escape from it so easily in case of any human/natural disaster remain in my subconscious. Everything has limits here and sometimes it can make you feel anxious. I wonder if some people has that inborn will of constantly moving from place to place, just getting into the car or taking a plane and travelling at least for a bit or if it is just a feature […]

Christmas time

This moment of the year is for me really important and emotional as I am writing this text few days before Christmas. Funchal looks fabulous with all light decorations but I still cannot feel that this time is just about to start. What am I missing? I have never spent these holidays abroad, even taking into account the fact that I had already lived abroad before. Beyond the whole religious aspect, this time is really significant for me as my entire family can be together which is normally not so easy as we live in different places. What I appreciate most in Poland is the festive atmosphere when you look out the window and see that snowy and cold land […]
