The italian Genius

Leonardo da Vinci is one of the main reasons why I am proud of being Italian. He was a world-class artist due to his predisposition for arts and sciences and for the results achieved in both artistic and scientific fields thanks to his ingenuity and talent. He was borned in 1452 and he started his career in a famous artistic Emporium in Florence where he could train his natural skills in painting activities and in sculpturing. His talent was rapidly recognised by the noble and powerful family of Medici, which attract the artist to his court and start commissioning some of his paintings. After that period, Leonardo was sent to Milan where he discovered a stimulating context that allowed him […]

Head in the clouds

Today you’ll learn about René Magritte, the famous Flemish surrealistic painter.  Because there are already numerous biographies out there and Google provides us so kindly with quite a complete overview in his life and oeuvre, I’ll try to approach him from a different angle. Even for the people who aren’t really actively roaming in the art scene, the image of a pipe with the description ‘ceci n’est pas une pipe’ (French for ‘this is not a pipe) must ring a bell. Or perhaps you have seen the applefaced guy with his bowler hat around? These frequently used images belong to the common visual knowledge, thanks to the many channels they’ve been exposed through. It could be you’ve been hiding from […]

Zdzisław Beksińsk

This Polish painter who loved apocalyptic and dystopian art is now one of the most recognized in Poland. His paintings inspire many – one example is the famous Mexican film director Guillermo del Toro, who has directed films such as The Shape of Water and Hellboy. Zdzisław Beksiński was a modern-day surrealist painter, photographer and sculptor. He was born in 1929 in Sanok, survived the World War II, finished the university in Krakow and was working as a bus designer for an automotive factory. At the same time was creating art, firstly sculptures and photographs, later he also started to paint. While his art was grim, Beksiński was a kind man with a keen sense of humor. He liked to […]

Maintaining a Union

The next elections for the European Parliament are almost here and more than ever, these elections will affect the future of the European Parliament. Up till now most of the decisions were made by the major parties but this year this could change because of the growing support for smaller parties. Because of this, the decision making in the European Parliament might become more open and democratic. In this way the European Parliament might start to look more like the Dutch parliament where multiple smaller parties form the majority instead of just two big parties. The Netherlands was one of the first countries to be part of the ‘European Coal and Steel Community’ which eventually became the European Union. With […]

Madeira in the summer

The way there doesn’t even seem long because of the nice views. If I would have to describe the perfect summer day in Madeira, it would be something like this. Waking up before the sun is up, taking breakfast with me and going by car to Pico do Areeiro with a group of friends. There we would sit on the second highest point of Madeira and eat breakfast while watching the sunrise. After that, we would drive down the mountain through the beautiful Madeiran forest. Next stop would be Santana. There we would go visit the Madeira theme park. Of course, the park is pretty touristic, but spending a few hours there with friends could be fun. Seeing the typical […]

Alvar Aalto

He did some really nice pieces of art. We were supposed to write about a painter from our own countries. But to be honest, in Finland, we don’t have any painters who would be really impressive for me or either known world-wide. So I decided to write about Alvar Aalto, an architect and a designer I personally like. Alvar Aalto was born in the 3rd of February 1898 in Kuortane. In 1921 he graduated from Helsinki’s technical academy. During his time in the academy, he took part in the civil war in Finland. After graduating he moved away from the capital city, to Jyväskylä. There he made his own architect office, following the Scandinavian design, which was popular at that time. […]

The Cathedral of Funchal

Sé parish is considered to be the second oldest quarter in Funchal. The Sé parish is located between the Cathedral and Ribeiro de João Gomes, the area where the sugar merchants settled in the 15th century. The constructions of the Cathedral started 1493 by the orders of Duke Manuel of Beja and Viseu, who later became the King Manuel I of Portugal. It was built on a sugarcane field, which was donated by the soon-to-be king Manuel I. The Cathedral was finished in 1517. It is built with tufa stones, which were brought by boats from Cabo Girão. The street to the sea in front of the Cathedral, and also behind it, was made into waterways, so the boats could […]

The father of our national epic

He is still considered to be one of the great men of Finland. Elias Lönnrot lived from 1802 to 1884. He wasn’t only a writer, but also a doctor, a scientist, an explorer and a professor of Finnish language and literature. Lönnrot also did a lot of important work for the Finnish language, he reformed the language, translated many psalms into Finnish and he was the publisher and a journalist of the first Finnish magazine. Between the years 1828 and 1834, he traveled around Finland. On those travels, he gathered a lot of poems from different poem performers. From those poems, he made Kalevala, our national epic. So, Kalevala is basically a huge book of poems, which all together make […]

His big brother Luís Filipe, as crown prince, was raised to become the king some day. He was interested in for example literature, reading and music. Full of memories

I have already experienced so much, and there is still so much to do! The most beautiful places and moments in your life will always stay in your heart and memories. But what I’m scared of here is that I experience so many moments and see so many places that I want to remember the rest of my life, but the memories just fade away. I can’t choose if I will remember my last weekend’s hike or the moments when I’m laughing with my roommates so hard, that I fall from my bed. When I’m going to be 55 and I will look back to this year, I hope I’ll remember how I felt in the special moments. The other […]
