United EU, a project by Thomas More

To be honest, writing about the importance of the next election in the European Parliament is really tough. Even though I have always been interested in politics, if you do not do research on your own, you might not know a lot about EU-politics. For me the next elections are going to be quite important in the sense of which parties will allow what kind of national policy. In theory the word “Öxit” used to exist but has not been used since at least two years. Austria knows it would be nothing without the EU and since this knowledge arrived in peoples heads, even the right wing party FPÖ stopped using this topic for their populism. Since Madeira is what […]

France and the european elections

About the European project and the next elections, France is quite divided, such as numerous countries in the Union. Firstly, about the elections for the European Parliament, France is not really involved, the people don’t really care about this election, this one of the elections with the highest rate of people who don’t vote. And this is for many reasons, first because Brussels and the Parliament always seem to be far away from the National needs. There is also a big lack of trust in the European institution. Like in almost all the European countries people are afraid to lose political power and ability to take some decision in profit of the European Parliament. But this election is still important, […]

May 2019 and the future of the EU!

The European elections in May 2019 will have a direct impact on our life. The European Parliament is the only supranational, democratically elected parliament in the world. All adult EU citizens will have an opportunity to select who will represent them and how Europe will act in the coming years. The European Union currently consists of 28 member states and is largely viewed as a cornerstone of European stability and prosperity, however, many EU countries have faced considerable economic difficulties. The EU has had to deal with a series of crises in these last few years: the Brexit negotiations, the trade dispute with the United States, the growth of right-wing populist movements, a democracy and rule-of-law concerns in Poland (since […]

A. Guterres e alterações climáticas

Britain, the EU and the future!

To summarise the intricacies and complexities of European Union is no mean feat, especially to do so in roughly 200 words. The European Union is facing its most difficult challenge to date as people in the member states are increasingly becoming apathetic or down right adversarial towards the EU. With the situation of Brexit being a predominant political problem, that will be felt by most people throughout the continent and to the rest of the world, the EU will have to weather this storm if it is to maintain the integrity and diplomatic relations with the rest of the union member states. The EU needs to be strong when confronting Britain as they have to show other countries that leaving […]

The European Union in my country

The next Elections to the European Parliament are held from the 23rd till the 26th of May 2019. At the moment 751 Members of the European Parliament represent the 28 member states with more than 512 million people. Because of the Brexit, the European Parliament voted in February 2018 to decrease the number to 705 members. With the exit of Great Britain the European Union faced some problems. At the beginning a lot of other countries thought about to follow Britain and also leave the EU. The parliament showed a lot of challenges the Brexit brings and because of that they could avoid it. Although there was a petition for a referendum my home country always was commonly for staying […]

A day in the mountains

A full day of hiking in the mountains – from Pico do Areeiro to Santana. Eventually. During my first month on Madeira I already had a chance to see the marvellous panoramic views offered by Pico do Areeiro, the third highest peak of the island. I enjoyed the experience so much that I even mentioned it in my previous journal entry – together with Beata we hitchhiked a car going from upper Funchal directly to the top of the mountain, but since it was already quite late and we also had other plans for that day, we decided not to go for that 7-kilometre-long trail to Pico Ruivo, Madeira’s highest. Not just then. It was only a month later, on […]

The importance of the Portuguese

The Portuguese language is official in 9 countries of the world, around four continents. Approximately 250 millions of people speaks this language. After Brazil the countries where the Portuguese is used are Mozambique, Angola and Portugal. Contrary of a lot of people thinks the Spanish isn’t the closest language. The origin of this comes from the Galician-Portuguese that was spoken in the old Kingdom of Galicia and in the north of Portugal. With the creation of the Kingdom of Portugal back in the 12th century, and the consequent expansion to the south of the Iberian Peninsula and later on to South America and Africa, the Portuguese became international, there was the beginning of it importance. An aftereffect of this global […]

Taking part in EVS

Taking part in EVS opens so many doors for those lucky enough to take part but it can also open you up to derision from those who don’t understand the concept of what we are doing. Many believe that this is just a paid holiday, something to do while putting off the inevitability of finding a ‘real’ job and ‘settling down’. While I will admit that this hasn’t been the most straining 10 months of my life, I like to believe I’ve gained much more here than I would have at a regular 9 to 5 job. This experience is not about the monetary benefits but the enrichment you find from time as a whole, seeing new things and meeting […]

So you speak fluent Portuguese?

… is what many tourists ask, thinking living abroad would instantly bless you with perfect language skills. And to be honest: not only tourists think that. I also kind of did, thinking living in Madeira, working with locals and hearing Portuguese all around me, I would playfully pick it up. The only way of language learning I had experienced so far was by regular classes back in school. Lessons twice a week, being tortured with grammar tests, neatly copying vocabulary from the text book, reading articles… I think everybody knows what I mean. These classes gave me a good base and I kept learning and practicing these languages abroad. Meeting people from all over the world started making me curious […]

Things I don’t know

Before I arrived to Madeira, and here as well, I had a chance to meet many people of different nationalities. Here in Funchal I participate in a project that requires learning a big chunk of Portuguese and Madeiran history. My fellow volunteers are intelligent, worldly and conscious people and we talk a lot about cultural differences, economy, politics and history. Thanks to them, and others who I encountered throughout the years, I got to learn about Portuguese dictatorship and Carnation Revolution, liberation of Spanish colonies in South America, Rotterdam bombing during WWII, potato famine in Ireland, Balkan Wars that many people my age remember… Coming from Poland, country in my opinion quite obsessed with its martyrdom, I realized each nation […]

The (un)importance of age

Age is not as important as you think, there are tons of examples! I have to admit that this is a rather unusual theme to write about. But as I found myself more than once confronted with my age in the last time, I started to think a bit more about the (un)importance of age. I bet every one of us heard it before: “You are too young for this” or “When you are older you will understand that”. But also sentences like: “Are you not a bit too old for that?” or “I did not expect that from a person your age” are really common. I myself assume during my work as a tour guide that old people are […]
