Festung Hohensalzburg

The name of my hometown “Salzburg” originates from two different events. “Salz” because of the highly relevant salt trade hundreds of years ago, and “Burg” due to the fortress I am going to write about today, which is located directly in the middle of the city. The fortress was built in the year 1077 and nowadays is one of the most important landmarks of Salzburg. Without it our city would look completely different and the atmosphere would not be the same anymore. It was built on the small city mountain called “Mönchsberg”, where people like to go to calm down and relax. From up there, you have a gorgeous view over the whole old town and all its monuments, churches […]

Beethoven Memorial

Ludwig van Beethoven was a german composer and pianist. He remains one of the most recognized and influential musicians of this period (classic and romantic), and is considered to be one of the greatest composers of all time. His exact birth date is not known,  but he was baptized on the 17th of December  1770 in Bonn. He probably inherited his musical talent from his father and grandfather, because both of them already sang in the electory choir. His father was really ambitious and wanted him to become a “wunderkind“. Since the age of 4 he needs to play the piano. He was taught by his father Johann van Beethoven and later on he worked with Christian Gottlob Neefe, a […]

Burg Gutenberg

An ancient castle from another time Gutenberg Castle (Burg Gutenberg) is a preserved castle in the town of Balzers (southern-most town of Liechtenstein). Gutenberg is one of the five castles of the principality and one of two that have survived preserved until the present day. Unlike Vaduz Castle in Vaduz, Gutenberg Castle does not serve as a residence of the princely family of Liechtenstein and is open to the general public as a museum. The castle lies on a hill near the center of Balzers and is accessible via a street and road known as “Burgweg“. Gutenberg Castle initially was being constructed as a medieval church and cemetery on a hilltop. In the early 12th century, the cemetery was canceled […]

COVID-19 fez diminuir a poluição

Cologne’s most famous monument

The three holy men, Napoleon, the Romans all combined in one single building.  The only thing that most people know from Cologne are carnival, of course, and the Cologne Cathedral. The construction of this cathedral began in 1248. Today it is somehow unfinished. Be it because of financial reasons, unclear orders or mysterious appearances. There are many legends about that unfinished cathedral in the heart of Cologne. Today the Cathedral is famous because of one of its windows, which was built by a famous Cologne artist. And of course, you shall never forget that the bones of the three holy men are buried in that cathedral. As you can see a lot of legends and histories are growing around that monument. But some […]

Vaduz Castle

Vaduz Castle is the palace and official residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein. The castle gave its name to the town of Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein, which it overlooks from an adjacent hilltop. The former owners, who were presumably also the builders, were the counts of Werdenberg-Sargans. The bergfried (the keep, built in the 12th century) and parts of the eastern side are the oldest. The tower stands on a piece of ground that is 12 by 13 meters in area. At the ground floor, the tower walls have a thickness of up to 4 meters. The original entrance lay at the courtyard side at a height of 11 meters. The chapel of St. Anna was presumably built in […]

Cabos submarinos, sismos e tsunamis

The Madeiran bubble

This island is so beautiful! And I feel so good. Last year, when I was in my final year of secondary school, I decided to wait starting my study and take a Gap-Year. After 6 years of hard work, I was sick of school and I wanted a life without any duties. However, when I finished my school and got my diploma, I felt bored and empty. I had no goal anymore and I really needed one. I tried to find a hobby like puzzling, reading a book and learning Portuguese words, but this was all soooo boring. So I stopped and kept on worrying about my problem of being purposeless. I’ve been here for about 3 weeks now, and […]

Irreplaceable

My project is sadly getting close to an end and it got me thinking about different aspects of my life here in Madeira, that I won’t be able to continue back home. First of all – nature and weekly hiking trips. Of course we do have amazing landscapes, mountains and forests in Poland too, but it’s not as easily accessible for me there as it is here. Never in my life I have been hiking as much as I do in Madeira. Secondly, the ocean. The atmosphere of living so close to it is irreplaceable. The salty scent, the sound of waves, the feeling of space you can only understand it if you’ve experienced that. It’s such a privilege to […]

Meeting great people

During three months, which is the period that I spent in Madeira, I explored part of the island in the weekends with some of my other colleagues. I had the opportunity, by hitchhiking, to meet a lot of people from the island. At the moment, most of the people that gave me a lift were Venezuelans, the second community of the island. Thanks to that I realized we mustn’t trust always in the media and there are people that agree and people that don’t agree at all with the socialism, most of them disagree just with the application of this ideology by the Venezuelan government and the current economic situation of their country. Anyway, they came looking for a better […]

Was the European Union a bad idea?

I studied European Structural and Investment Funds and I thought that it would be interesting to see what the EU have done for Madeira. As a pro-European, and even though I am well aware that some people are sceptical about this whole idea, I want to believe that the European Union can only be beneficial to its member states. The European Structural and Investment Funds (ESI Funds) are the European Union’s main investment policy tool: 454 billion euros have been allocated from the EU budget to be invested in more than 500 programmes. Together with national co-financing of 183 billion euros, the total investments amounts to at least 637 billion euros. With this budget, the ESI Funds have become increasingly […]

How to stay motivated

Hard to believe, but even when you live in Madeira after some time your life eventually becomes “normal” You stop choosing to walk by the ocean, because that route it’s longer; you get stuck in a rut when it comes to work; you feel like you’re just doing the same thing every weekend and in your free time and you think you’ll never going to actually learn Portuguese. Is there a way out of this dead end? Well yes, there is, but you need to make an effort. I realized I need to create a “life” outside of my usual surroundings, separate from work, colleagues and the residence. The easiest way to do it is by making new friends among […]

A language of Camões

Why in my homeland, Poland, more and more people start to learn Portuguese? Maybe because it sounds like a mixture of Russian and Spanish? Maybe because it is spoken by around 215 million of people? Maybe because we are just passionate about your country? In Poland there is only one official language and guess what? It is used as an official spoken language only there. So this is one of the possible reasons why many Poles want to learn other languages. Let’s be brutally honest: if some tourists visits our country we need to speak other languages to them because otherwise, they would be terrified. For foreigners, it is even hard to pronounce ‘sorry’ or ‘thank you’ in my mothertongue. […]
