University For the Common Good

I attended Glasgow Caledonian University, in Scotland, where I studied business and tourism management. Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) is a very new university, it was founded in 1993, because of the merger of The Queen’s College and Glasgow Polytechnic. It is the third university in Glasgow, is located in the centre of the city and serves over 20 thousand students and 1500 staff members. There are also campuses in London, New York, and a college of engineering in Oman. The university’s chancellor is currently Annie Lennox, famous singer in Eurythmics, social activist and philanthropist. The chancellor’s role is mostly symbolic, she attends important events such as graduation. In most Scottish universities graduates are “capped” before receiving their degree, which means […]

Asproni, Motzo, Arborea

My long journey into the Italian high school system, through dreams, changes and troubles. Except for the very first years of elementary and middle school, I have never been a model student; I really cannot say that I always studied hard during my 6 years of high school, even if I have always had a decent ability to understand at first glance. For various reasons I have found myself changing several classes, courses and school. Moreover I had to repeat one year, the third one, but in any case I always had to study during the summer the subjects that I didn’t pass during the year. All these things for sure didn’t help my nature of being constantly distracted from […]

The school system in Germany

I was in my last school two and a half years. There I did my general qualification for university entrance at the beginning of this year. In Germany we have 16 federal states and every state can change the school system a little. This is why we don’t have a uniform school system in the whole country. This is difficult because the levels in the different states can be different. In my federal state the students are studying for four years in primary school, six years in junior high school and two and a half years or three years in high school. In high school I have the choice of which school subjects I want to take. I have to […]

Musical education

I studied in Puolalanmäki Upper Secondary School for three years and graduated in 2018. It’s one of the Upper secondary schools in Turku, which is a city on the southwest coast of Finland. The main reason why I wanted to apply to Puolalanmäki was that the school offers a great music oriented programme. The programme also ended up being the reason why I was motivated to go to school every day. Alongside normal subjects I had a lot of music courses, for example music history, theory, singing lessons and classes on how to express yourself with music and how to get better in performing songs. I was one of the singers in our school’s choir, which consisted of more than […]

My old school: HLW Rankweil

The “HLW Rankweil”, as it’s called, is located in Rankweil, Austria and was founded in 1977. The school I’m writing about is my old high school. At the moment there are around 65 teachers and 480 students, most of them being girls. It takes five years to finish and graduate from this school. This school is not like a normal high school, the correct translation of the name is: school and college of management and services industries. This means that in addition to general education it provides a technical and vocational training in subject-related theoretical and business-oriented subjects. The essential objectives are: personal growth and development, creativity, teamwork, communicative skills in several languages and practical experience. After this school you […]

Adventuring myself

I spent my last week in Guimarães, in an on-arrival training that all long-term volunteers will do. Going to the mainland was an adventure itself, but the training was also more an adventure than I expected. During my time there I met some amazing people, learned a lot about different cultures, about myself and also about other volunteers’ projects. I’ve been here in Madeira now seven weeks, and I have made new friends and contacts, went hiking to beautiful places, started a new hobby and made so many wonderful memories already. Living the dream. But the training made me think about the reasons why I wanted to do volunteering, why I came here and what I’m going to do to […]

Sustainable tourism

Mass tourism and overconsumption can kill every kind of natural and cultural landscape? Recently Madeira has been nominated to title of the world’s leading island destination 2017 but at the same time it is not even in TOP 100 destinations which represent sustainable tourism. As I am interested in global changes in tourism industry I went to the conference “Sustainable Tourism – a Tool for Development” held on September 27th in Funchal as a part of celebration of World Tourism Day. Unfortunately, what I have learnt about Madeira is that there is a lack of actions and good practices towards sustainable tourism in this island. First of all, I think that not everything should be for free because it does […]

Porto Santo experience

When you need to change the environment and the cheapest and closest option is another island Being on an island for few months creates a feeling that you are closed in small place and cut off from the real world. To get my mind busy with a bit different place I went to Porto Santo. Although the island is so close and so similar to Madeira, being there feels quite different. It may not be the best place for people who like big cities, but for me it was almost perfect. It was colder and the place was not crowded, in fact, there were almost no tourists and local people were not that much present on the streets because of […]

So much to do and (not) enough time

I just need to relax and enjoy the beauty of this island. Following that I will not regret anything when I look back. Looking at a map Madeira seems like a tiny island, which could be explored in a few days. There is a big difference between expectations and reality. There are so many hidden places to see, so many Levadas to follow and so many mountains to climb. Being a volunteer for ten months seems long at first but time flies. I have been in Madeira for about six weeks now. At the one hand it feels like I have just arrived a few days ago, on the other hand I feel already home and know my way around. […]

Real life lessons

Let´s hope that these lessons are only the beginning of many others and that I can keep learning as fast as I did last two months. One week ago, I went to the mainland for the on-arrival training in Guimaraes. This is a training for those who do EVS in Portugal and who just arrived. I had so much fun this week! We didn’t have to cook, which was of course one of the things I appreciated the most and we also talked about A LOT. After this week I realised a few things, I realised how much I had already learned from the beginning until that moment. Let me sum up a few things: – I learned how to […]

The portrait of a nightmare

Once I had a very weird dream, I was in another country, outside of home and alone. This was my dream I woke up at 9 in the morning, and immediately I realized that I wasn’t in my bed, or my room, or my house and suddenly I saw through the window (in this strange room there were 3 beds and 1 window) and I saw that I was even further of my country, just there in the middle of a big square there was a flat that I didn’t recognize it was green and red and with some weird symbols in the middle, suddenly someone entered in the room there was a very tall man with the palest skin […]
