The European project in the future

The future of the European Project depends on our acts now. As a young European citizen who has already participated in projects provided by the European Union, I know that the best way to support the European Project growth is taking part in diversified programmes such as studying abroad, voluntary service or any kinds of internships. These experiences give a new perspective for the future of young people. Mobility does not pose any difficulties anymore because it is a part of the projects mentioned above. Moreover, we are eager to apply for jobs abroad, to travel and stay in touch with all the people we have  met along our way. All the connections between the people and the sense of […]

Estudantes luso-descendentes

Freedom is participation!

As european citizens, we all have the responsibility to take care of the EU and contribute to its success, development and improvement.  The EU is not only an International Organization of States, it is a political and economical union based on the common interests, necessities, rights and obligations of all their citizens. It has been created to generate services and to manage and solve common problems of the European States in order to offer better life conditions to the citizens of this geopolitical area.  For this reason, the europeans have inherited the duty to participate actively towards the growth of the EU.  We are required to exercise our rights such as voting in the EU elections, to invest in its […]

Citizen of the EU

I’m proud and happy to be part of EU. Finland joined the EU in 1995 together with Sweden and Austria. It gives me so many opportunities, one of them, which I’m experiencing right now: the European voluntary service. What can I do to help the EU to survive and grow better? An obvious way is voting. It’s important to vote in your own country’s elections, and in EU elections. Decisions and changes made in one country might lead to other countries making the same kind of changes, in better direction. What I really like about EU, is that the borders are open. It makes travelling easy, and motivates me to travel more and see the world. That’s how EU brings […]

What can I do for the EU?

In these times it is so important to be a part of our society and to participate in the European Union. But what can we do for the European Union? At first, we can vote. All citizens of the European Union have a suffrage and we have to use it. Everyone can complain again about the politic of the EU but you can be an active part of it. And I think that most people in Germany know this. Because the voter turnout was 61,4 % in Germany for the elections to the European Parliament in 2019. And I was surprised that only 10.9% of the German voted for right populists. So, I think we are doing well in Germany. […]

Grande Adria, o continente perdido

A Europe of my grandchildren

How can we ensure the future of the European Project in the coming decades? Firstly, I doubt that there will be a European Project for my grandchildren (if I have any at all?) The problem is divided into certain reasons of why there might not be a future. If I were to have grandchildren and they were British citizens (unless I marry a someone from the EU 27 or if my children marry someone from the EU) then I do not think they will have access to European Citizenship. Brexit is the reason for this. My grandchildren would not be concerned necessarily with the European project because I believe that the UK by my estimations and how things are going […]

European Union and the elections

This article is about the importance of the European Union and the next European election. Since I applied for my voluntary service on Madeira I realized how important European connections and projects are to get to learn new languages, cultures and moreover to develop further as a human being, such as a big community. Being part of the European Union makes me aware of many benefits we have because of this interconnectedness. Our possibility to go abroad has changed a lot in the last few years and it is getting easier with every year. As a result of the EU, we have more chances to take part in Erasmus projects or student exchanges than ever before. But being part of […]

Europe for me

Europe doesn’t mean only a couple of countries, it is more than that. Members of the European Parliament are elected every five years and this year in May will be the next election. As a transnational parliament with directly elected members, the European Parliament is unique in the world. The institution represents the interests of the EU citizen at an European level. The Parliament elects the President of the European Commission and appoints the Commissioners (as a college). There is more scepticism in the Netherlands about what Europe is and if it is necessary to be in the European Union. In general the Netherlands are positive about Europe but the well-known migration discussion is still a big deal for some […]

European elections and the future

This year my country celebrates 15 years of being a member of European Union. There were a lot of changes in Poland during that time – in my opinion mostly good ones. And thanks to it I could become an EVS volunteer in Madeira. Being a part of the European Union brought many advantages for young people who can now study or volunteer abroad. My parents didn’t have this opportunity and they are happy that I could go abroad thanks to the Erasmus+ program. In my opinion it’s very important for young people to get to know other cultures, learn languages, meet people from different countries, get experience in new areas. When they learn and get another point of view […]

Liechtenstein and the EU

As you may or may not know Liechtenstein isn‘t actually in the European Union. Together with Norway and Iceland we belong to the European Economic Area. Liechtenstein joined the EEA in 1995, after becoming a full member of the EFTA (European free trade association) in 1991. Joining the EEA, also obliged Liechtenstein to apply some European Union laws because they are considered EEA relevant. There is some further cooperation with the EU via Switzerland as Liechtenstein is highly integrated with the Swiss economy (including using the Swiss francs). There are further agreements between Liechtenstein and the EU, on matters such as the Schengen agreement, taxation for savings and there are ongoing talks on combating fraud and exchanging information on tax matters. […]

The future of the European Union

The elections to the European Parliament are approaching and, once again, millions of Europeans are called to vote. These elections are especially important, as crucial decisions will be taken in the coming years that will affect climate change, the resettlement of refugees and asylum seekers and the sovereignty of the peoples of Europe. However, we can say that elections to the European Parliament do not usually attract much interest in the population, at least in Spain, because the power of the European Commission is perceived as something limited and distant that does not have much impact on the member States. Even so, I believe that we are living a decisive period in terms of the continuity of the Union, since […]
