Born into the second ruler house of what is nowadays known as France, Charlemagne has proclaimed the French king in 768. His importance as a German monarch began with the Saxon Wars (772-804) when he invaded Saxony with the intent to conquer, a goal he finally reached after 32 years of brutal and bloody battles. One of his main motivations was to get present-day Germany to unify Europe under the Christian cross, which is why he was and always will be known as the Father of Europe. The height of his power was in the year 800 when he was proclaimed Emperor by Pope Leo II. His crowning turned him into “Augustus Imperator Renovatio […]

He was the middle son of Kazimierz I Kujawski, his two older brothers were almost adults when he was born. However, they were actually only half-brothers, because his father was married twice before he married the mother of Wladyslaw, Eufrozyna. A legend says that Eufrozyna tried to poison the older sons of Kazimierz I, so Wladyslaw who was still a baby at that time would inherit some lands after his father. The trap of Eufrozyna […]

Independence of Finland

Independence Day was first celebrated in 1917. During the interregnum from the fall of Nicholas II to the end of the Finnish Civil War in 1918, sovereignty in Finland was exercised by the Finnish Parliament. And until the October Revolution and the declaration of independence by the Russian interim government which happened after the civil war, regents were appointed by the parliament and a new king was to be elected. The nation of Finland has never been an independent sovereign monarchy. No attempt to establish a fully-fledged Finnish monarchy has been successful. When it finally became established as a modern independent nation state it was, despite a very brief flirtation with a monarchy, in the form of a republic. And […]

Travel around the coast

Something that a lot of people do in the summer in Madeira. The most popular way to travel is to rent a car and split the cost, making it quite cheap transportation. However it can be hard to drive in the mountains, and if you don’t have a great car and a lot of people you can get stuck on a hill. A bus is also an option, somehow they can easily drive on even the smallest and steepest roads, but it can be quite expensive to get a ticket. The last option is to ask for a lift on the road. It is actually pretty safe here so there is no problem with doing that, and it is free. […]

Prepare your Summer

Open your eyes to catch all the beauty of Madeira A French guy in Funchal will give you, this month, some tips to prepare your summer, as you’re coming soon in Madeira Island. Take what you want, but just know that some little mistakes are hidden! To begin, Madeira is a very cold Island, because It’s climate is very fresh. That’s why people always need to have and/or to wear a pullover, some waterproof sneakers, a pair of short trousers, and a waterproof sun hat. However, if you like to go to the beach, you’ll enjoy coming to Madeira, so don’t forget to bring with you your swimsuit and to buy a ticket for Porto Santo, it will worth it! To go […]

Madeira in the summer

The way there doesn’t even seem long because of the nice views. If I would have to describe the perfect summer day in Madeira, it would be something like this. Waking up before the sun is up, taking breakfast with me and going by car to Pico do Areeiro with a group of friends. There we would sit on the second highest point of Madeira and eat breakfast while watching the sunrise. After that, we would drive down the mountain through the beautiful Madeiran forest. Next stop would be Santana. There we would go visit the Madeira theme park. Of course, the park is pretty touristic, but spending a few hours there with friends could be fun. Seeing the typical […]

Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço

There you can see huge cliffs reaching out of the sea. This eastern peninsula of the island is from volcanic origins, it consists mostly basalt stone but also limestone sediment formations. Because of the pretty dry climate and the exposure to northern winds, there is low vegetation. It looks very different from the other parts of the island and this is what makes it so special. A nice fact is that the name of the vereda comes from the name of João Gonçalves Zarco’s caravel, São Lourenço. Zarco was one of the three discoverers of Madeira. For me, this walk is definitely one that you NEED to do when you are in Madeira, it’s one of the most beautiful walks […]

How not waste a summer in Madeira

Let me give you some non-qualified tips for the months to come. To be honest, I have not been in Madeira during the hottest months of summer. My experience started in September what I would still call summer due to the heat. Madeira is very versatile and full of possible activities. That is the reason why I love this island. People who love the sea have several options to explore the Atlantic Ocean. Snorkeling and scuba diving let you discover the biodiversity of the sea dwellers. But not everyone likes to dive in the dark and deep ocean and some rather stay above the surface of the water, at least with their heads. There are still enough activities, such as […]

Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh: of the most famous artists of the 19th century. This fame is not only because his art, but also because of his life. He was born in 1853, in a village near the Belgian border. When starting adulthood he did not really know what to do. He first became a schoolteacher, then a book salesman, studied theology and became a preacher in a coal mine. He did not really do well in all these jobs and got fired for all of them. Eventually, his brother Theo convinced Vincent to become an artist after seeing the sketches he made. He moved around in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Paris before eventually moving to the village of Arles in France, […]
