The “HLW Rankweil”, as it’s called, is located in Rankweil, Austria and was founded in 1977. The school I’m writing about is my old high school. At the moment there are around 65 teachers and 480 students, most of them being girls. It takes five years to finish and graduate from this school. This school is not like a normal high school, the correct translation of the name is: school and college of management and services industries. This means that in addition to general education it provides a technical and vocational training in subject-related theoretical and business-oriented subjects. The essential objectives are: personal growth and development, creativity, teamwork, communicative skills in several languages and practical experience. After this school you […]

My University

I studied at the University of Reading for three years. My degree was in History and Politics. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. Reading is in Berkshire which is about a thirty minute train ride from London Paddington. The University itself has some significant history attached to it. It was formerly part of Oxford University’s Christ Church College but was granted independence to produce its own degrees by a Royal Charter from King George V. It was also the first university to appoint a woman as a chair at an English University level-institution in 1912. The University also boasts having the renowned Twentieth Century composer Gustav Holst as a Professor of music.  Reading University can also proclaim one of the […]

Cities of the World

Boom and Funchal offers a big list of cultural activities As Boom and Funchal are quite different in infrastructure and style, they are both considered to be world cities by size, recognisability, and status. They both host a great number of people as Funchal is a touristic hub under the Madeiran flag, so does the annual gathering of people in the city of Boom for the biggest music festival in the world, Tomorrowland. Both are host to a great variety of people from all over the world. An ocean of differences?

Funchal and Warsaw – the list of similarities between both places. Funchal and my home city are so distant, however, what are their similarities? In this united Europe, what do our cities share in this Union of, so far, 28 countries? What comes to my mind are mostly differences. In terms of the number of citizens, area, architecture and landscape that surrounds both cities. But where I see the biggest difference is climate. In Warsaw and generally Poland, weather is quite unpredictable. During summer days there might be an average of thirty-five degrees plus. On the other hand, sometimes in winter, the thermometer can show minus twenty-five degrees Celsius. While Madeiran temperatures are more stable throughout the year. Secondly, I […]

So far and so close

When I arrived in Funchal, It felt like home. I arrived in Funchal short time ago, so it’s a bit difficult for me to talk about similarities when I hardly know the idiosyncrasies of Madeiran people. However, I must say that I immediately felt at home. I come from San Sebastian, a city in the Basque Country, in the north of Spain, but I am a French resident since 2012. When I arrived in Funchal, I had the feeling of being in a known place, even though I had never been here. The people are friendly and warm and they immediately treat you as if they knew you. I think one of the biggest similarities with my hometown, is that […]

The city has several famous theaters and many interesting museums. The charming Old Town with an unique Main Square and the iconic gothic St Mary’s Basilica attracts thousands of tourists. As well as this, the Old Jewish Quarter and its nonroutine bars and exquisite restaurants are a sight to behold. You can easily find diverse pieces of art in some small exhibitions directly in the streets. The significant number of art houses provides access to the independent and sophisticated cinema. A great many music festivals take place here, from traditional to modern and alternative sounds. […]

From Poland to Funchal

It’s hard to believe that my locality and Funchal have anything in common. The place where I come from is located in the center of Poland. It is a peaceful countryside where days pass slowly. There is neither a river or lake. Unlike Funchal, which is surrounded by waves of the Atlantic Ocean. No doubt Funchal and whole Madeira have unbelievably varied and beautiful flora. Much more diversified than flora in my countryside. Nevertheless, forests remind me my countryside. Especially during the Levada walks I have that familiar feeling of peace and relaxation. Another similarity is the hospitality of local people. Their kindness and willingness to help others bring to my mind my family and friends who wish me well. […]

Unknown Similarities

Unknown similarities found even in distant and most different places. How to compare two places that appear to be so completely different at first glance? Funchal, the thriving southern metropolis and my small home village Husen, a part of western Germany, totally unknown to 99% of the world’s population. My village consists of round about 1,000 people, a stark contrast to the population of Funchal with its over 110,000 inhabitants. And even if we take a look at the two cities my village belongs to, Lichtenau and Paderborn, there do not seem to be that many similarities. The most obvious connection might be the big Portuguese community in Paderborn, which offers Fado concerts, as well as Portuguese language and cooking […]
