Dutch people do not celebrate Christmas as much as their neighbors Many holidays are celebrated worldwide and while the holidays might be international, every country has its own traditions. In the Netherlands, Easter is usually only celebrated by children who excitedly explore their gardens in the hope of finding sweets and chocolates and getting a glimpse of the Easter bunny. While Christmas is a holiday that is very popular in many western countries, Dutch people do not celebrate it as much as their neighboring countries. The streets are decorated with many lights, Christmas trees are sold and many gifts are bought. But most of these gifts are unwrapped on the 5th of December instead of the 25th. In the Netherlands […]

Traditions in Austria

Fake Christmas trees and a lack of snow. Christmas 2018 will always be a curious memory for me. Since Christmas is always associated with snow and beautifully decorated Christmas trees, this year Christmas on Madeira was quite different from what I’m used to. In Austria, the main celebration of Christmas takes place at the 24th, whereas here the people care more about the 25th. Usually, we buy a Christmas tree around the 22nd and decorate it on the 24th. Afterward, we go to church, eat some Fondue and receive presents. To be honest, nothing too special. My favorite Christmas habit is called “Christbaum loben” it if a funny thing to do and works as follows. After you served your time […]

Traditions in Finland

Finnish traditions are very different from many other countries! Christmas traditions in Finland Finland is the home of Santa Claus and Christmas Land. That is one reason why Christmas in Finland can be truly memorable especially for visitors. Finnish traditions are also very different from many other countries and regions in the world. They have some similarities with neighboring Scandinavian countries and some traditions are shared among other Christian households around the world. The first Sunday in December is called the First Advent and it is the start for the Finnish Christmas season. Many children – and why not adults also – use advent calendars for counting down the days until Christmas Eve. Those calendars come in many forms from […]

Primeiros humanos a viver no mundo

Traditions of Vorarlberg

Church services start at around six in the morning. Christmas and Advent is a very special and important time at my home. Winter is coming, the skiing season starts and it might snow a little. On the first of December, the Advent starts and every child is allowed to open the first door of their Advent calendar. Another tradition is the Advent wreath, it is a circle made of fir branches and with four candles on top. The last four Sundays before Christmas one candle is lit, and so on until Christmas day, when finally all four candles burn. Another typical thing is Rorate. These are church services which start at around six in the morning and end with breakfast […]

Christmas in Silesia, Poland

We celebrate it a bit differently than in the rest of the country. Christmas in Poland is a very special time. But in Silesia, the region where I was born and raised and where all my family lives, we celebrate it a bit differently than in the rest of the country. The most important day is Christmas Eve on the 24th of December. At my home, the preparations start early in the morning when all of the women (me, my mother and my grandmother) start cooking dishes for the dinner, bake cakes and make makówki – my favorite Christmas sweet dish made of poppyseed, nuts, and bread. When the kids spot the first star in the sky, the whole family […]

An ocean of differences?

Funchal and Warsaw – the list of similarities between both places. Funchal and my home city are so distant, however, what are their similarities? In this united Europe, what do our cities share in this Union of, so far, 28 countries? What comes to my mind are mostly differences. In terms of the number of citizens, area, architecture and landscape that surrounds both cities. But where I see the biggest difference is climate. In Warsaw and generally Poland, weather is quite unpredictable. During summer days there might be an average of thirty-five degrees plus. On the other hand, sometimes in winter, the thermometer can show minus twenty-five degrees Celsius. While Madeiran temperatures are more stable throughout the year. Secondly, I […]

So far and so close

When I arrived in Funchal, It felt like home. I arrived in Funchal short time ago, so it’s a bit difficult for me to talk about similarities when I hardly know the idiosyncrasies of Madeiran people. However, I must say that I immediately felt at home. I come from San Sebastian, a city in the Basque Country, in the north of Spain, but I am a French resident since 2012. When I arrived in Funchal, I had the feeling of being in a known place, even though I had never been here. The people are friendly and warm and they immediately treat you as if they knew you. I think one of the biggest similarities with my hometown, is that […]

Cultural Capitals

Kraków, considered by many the cultural capital of the country. It was named (by the EU) the European Capital of Culture for the year 2000. The city has several famous theaters and many interesting museums. The charming Old Town with an unique Main Square and the iconic gothic St Mary’s Basilica attracts thousands of tourists. As well as this, the Old Jewish Quarter and its nonroutine bars and exquisite restaurants are a sight to behold. You can easily find diverse pieces of art in some small exhibitions directly in the streets. The significant number of art houses provides access to the independent and sophisticated cinema. A great many music festivals take place here, from traditional to modern and alternative sounds. […]

From Poland to Funchal

It’s hard to believe that my locality and Funchal have anything in common. The place where I come from is located in the center of Poland. It is a peaceful countryside where days pass slowly. There is neither a river or lake. Unlike Funchal, which is surrounded by waves of the Atlantic Ocean. No doubt Funchal and whole Madeira have unbelievably varied and beautiful flora. Much more diversified than flora in my countryside. Nevertheless, forests remind me my countryside. Especially during the Levada walks I have that familiar feeling of peace and relaxation. Another similarity is the hospitality of local people. Their kindness and willingness to help others bring to my mind my family and friends who wish me well. […]

Unknown Similarities

Unknown similarities found even in distant and most different places. How to compare two places that appear to be so completely different at first glance? Funchal, the thriving southern metropolis and my small home village Husen, a part of western Germany, totally unknown to 99% of the world’s population. My village consists of round about 1,000 people, a stark contrast to the population of Funchal with its over 110,000 inhabitants. And even if we take a look at the two cities my village belongs to, Lichtenau and Paderborn, there do not seem to be that many similarities. The most obvious connection might be the big Portuguese community in Paderborn, which offers Fado concerts, as well as Portuguese language and cooking […]

Differences: Kajaani and Funchal

There is still one significant similarity. European Union. Today’s temperature in Funchal is 25 degrees. In my home city, Kajaani, it is 5 degrees. Here in Funchal, we have palm trees, sand, flowers, and an ocean. In Kajaani, we have grass, birch trees, and lakes. By night streets of Funchal are full of people. By night in Kajaani, there are no people on the streets, and actually not necessarily in days. My name is Anni Ruskela and I am from Kajaani, Finland. Currently, I live here in Funchal, Madeira. I am going to stay here for seven months. It already feels like I have been here many months. Funchal is already my second home; all these streets that I am […]
