The history of one Balkan state

The history of the first Bulgarian state dates back to the 7th century. Bulgaria was founded by Asparukh in 681. The Christianisation of the state began at the end of the 9th century. At the beginning of the 11th century Bulgaria was conquered by Byzantium. After more than 100 years, a major uprising restored the Bulgarian state to form the Second Bulgarian Empire. Bulgaria was flourishing over the next two centuries until it disintegrated into two smaller states, which were eventually subjugated by the Ottoman Empire. The Turks eliminated Bulgarian knighthood, deprived Bulgarian citizens of their rights and subordinated the Church to the Patriarch of Constantinople. Bulgaria remained an integral Turkish territory for the next 500 years. A great uprising […]

The history of Iceland

All countries in Europe have a long history. I want to tell you more about how Iceland became an independent state. The first people to settle in Iceland were probably Irish monks who came in the 8th century. Around 870 the tribal leader Ingólfur Arnason, expelled from Norway, reached the southwest of Iceland with his entourage and expelled the few Irish monks. The population increased strongly because the trailing Nordic settlers. And it at this time they convened the Althing, the oldest parliament in the world. In 1262, after years of fighting with the opposition Icelandic clans, Iceland fell under Norwegian sovereignty. This was the end of the Free State of Iceland. In 1380 Norway and Iceland fell under Danish […]

Portugal defende a ciência aberta

The History of Finland

I chose Finland because it is the most eco-friendly country in the world. This is the outcome based on the EPI: The Environmental Performance Index. It’s a useful tool to measure the green credentials of various countries around the world. The EPI assesses a country’s eco-performance across nine categories: agriculture, air quality, biodiversity and habitat, climate and energy, forests, fisheries, health impacts, water resources, and water and sanitation. Now the question I ask myself is how this came to be? What is the reason that they excel in this field? Why do they manage to prioritize this green quest, where other countries fail to do so? And more importantly, can we learn something from them? It all boils down to […]

A Musician from my Country?

I picked a musician from Austria There are no famous musicians from Liechtenstein. As you may know, Liechtenstein is a very small country. Therefore it is very hard to find a famous musician from there, because, we don’t have any successful musicians. We do have small bands and other music groups, but none of them are worth writing about, so I picked a musician from Austria to write about instead. So the musician I’m writing about instead is called “Yung Hurn”. He’s an Austrian Rapper from the capital Vienna. His original name is Julian Sellmeister and he was born in 1995. He dropped out of high school and started rapping. His mixtape “22” was an instant hit, especially his hit […]

Austrian Legend: Falco

He lived how he died… SPECTACULAR When I got the email with the information about this month’s article I was just listening to “Ganz Wien” by the Austrian legend Falco! So, obviously, the case was clear and I chose him for this Text. Falco, whose birth name is Johann “Hans” Hölzl was born in 1957 in Vienna. Falco attended several different forms of education and schools, however, none of them seemed to fit. In the end, he quit his music studies because “he wanted to become a real musician”. His first studio album “Der Kommissar” (the commissioner) rapidly dominated the Austrian club scene and was wildly popular in several other European countries. His second album “Junge Roemer” was, sadly, kind […]

Kojey Radical

A  musical phenomenon. A hip/hop star that defies boundaries. I would say that I am blessed to be from a country that has contributed a prolific amount of talent to popular and underground music. From Elgar to Bowie, and Henry Purcell to Radiohead, the small but hugely important island that I call home has changed the sound and shifted the landscape of music throughout history. However, it is an established name in the London hip/hop scene that I wish to spotlight. Kojey Radical, from East London, has seen a transition from spoken word poetry to a lyrical rap heavyweight in an outstandingly short amount of time. He has already garnered praise and features from grime legends Wretch 32 and Ghetts. […]

Belgian Musician

Let me introduce Bart Peeters: a Belgian musician, singer, and actor Bart August Maria Peeters was born on the 30th of November 1959 and has had a prolific history in acting, producing music and presenting television shows in Belgium. He actually studied Germanic philology before getting into small television gigs and gathering notoriety in the small country that is Belgium. He would attend drama classes early on in life, where he met Jan Leyers and Hugo Matthyssen, of whom he would later collaborate within both the fields of music (in the form of a band) and the television world, producing children’s entertainment shows. He is famous for one of the best-known kids television shows in Flemish history “Dag Sinterklaas”, in […]
