Christmas traditions in Ireland

Ireland has a wide number of Christmas traditions steeped in the Gaelic and Catholic heritage of the country. A tradition that was very widespread in the 1970s but which seems to be dying out somewhat and especially in urban areas is the candle in the window. Symbolically the candle represented a welcome to Joseph and Mary as they wandered in search of lodgings. The candle indicated to strangers and especially to the poor that there may be an offering of food in the house within. During the penal times in Ireland Catholic priests were forbidden to perform mass so the candle would also show people passing by that the person in the house was a Catholic believer and mass could […]

Christmas in Scotland

Scottish Christmas traditions are very recent because Christmas did not become a public holiday in Scotland until 1958. In 1640 an act in the Scottish Parliament banned the celebration of Christmas, then called Yule. This was because of the Reformation, which saw the country breaking with the Catholic Church and developing a national Kirk (church) which was influenced by Presbyterian outlooks. The attitudes towards celebrations changed after the Reformation leading to them outlawing the celebration of Christmas festivities. Christmas was, therefore, a quiet affair for many years; which meant that Hogmanay (New Year’s Eve) was the biggest festival for the Scottish. Hogmanay includes many traditions such as “first-footing” which is to be the first person to visit a friend after […]

No esclarecimento […]

Christmas Eve around the table

Like in most Central European countries, Christmas in Poland is a quaint and much-beloved affair. Most of the Polish Christmas celebrations take place on 24th December, and even though the day isn’t an official public holiday in Poland, to many Poles it is one of the most significant and family-oriented dates in the calendar. Many institutions stop working earlier than usual on the day of Christmas Eve, which is usually celebrated with a family dinner at home. Many Poles wait until the first star appears in the sky before sitting down to eat on 24th December. This tradition commemorates the Star of Bethlehem, which according to the New Testament guided the Wise Men to the birthplace of Christ. Nowadays, with […]

Christmas time in Germany

From “Nikolaus” to “Christkind” – who brings the presents? A long time ago, Saint Nicholas presented the children with gifts every year on the 6th of December. This act was a Catholic veneration of saints. Protestants, however, did not believe in this and so – probably even the reformer Martin Luther made sure that the distribution of presents was postponed to the 24th of December. From this point, Jesus alias the “Holy Christian” brought the gifts. This finally became the German “Christkind”. Despite this, up to now, “Nikolaus” brings small presents to the children, on the 6th of December. They have to put their clean shoes in front of their door and will find some presents in them, the next […]

The smell of fresh Christmas cookies and streets decorated with beautiful fairy lights everywhere! Austria can be a Christmas paradise, because if you’re lucky enough it will be covered in a thick layer of snow and long before the 24th December, when the main celebration takes place, the whole country is in Christmas mood. It usually all starts at the beginning of December, as that’s when the Christmas markets start and the streets are enlightened with fairy lights – so all the towns start looking Christmassy. In this time people like coming together at the Christmas markets to drink mulled wine or meet up at someone’s home and enjoy some homemade Christmas cookies. The most famous ones are called “Vanillekipferl”, […]

Lil´kleine and Ronnie Flex

They conquered the world of the fourteen years old minds Lil’kleine and Ronnie Flex conquered the world of the fourteen years old minds and replace their thoughts of coke and chips for alcohol and drugs. If you want to chill, there is not a problem, because I will come. And of course, I never come alone, because I will always have alcohol and drugs with me. The controversial text wherein they mention that all teens say yes to MDMA is a search for the borders. They decided to cross that border in a mixture between pop and hip-hop. This song was the beginning of their bank accounts overloading with money. Nothing is too crazy. While Ronnie Flex focused more on […]

The palace and official residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein The castle of Vaduz (formerly known as Hohenliechtenstein) is the palace and official residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein.
