Mein kleiner grüner Kaktus

An example of how Max Raabe’s music transcends time and space. Max Raabe enriches the musical landscape both nationally and internationally by reviving chansons from the 1920s and 1930s, re-interpreting contemporary songs, and composing film scores. In his early childhood, Raabe became passionate about music and joined a children’s choir. To further develop his talents, he attended singing classes and ultimately decided to study music at the Berlin University of the Arts. In Berlin, he soon found like-minded people and established the Palace Orchestra in 1985. The orchestra specialized in performing music from the 1920s and 1930s. A decade later, the orchestra released a series of songs, one of which appeared in a German film production. Ever since, the orchestra […]

Mikel Laboa

One of the Basque Country’s most important singer-songwriters Considered the father of Basque music, his music has had an influence on younger generations. His album Bat-Hiru (“One-Three”) was chosen in a reader’s poll by the local newspaper as the greatest Basque album in history. Nearly all of his songs are sung in Basque. Mikel Laboa was born 15 June 1934 in Pasaia, Gipuzkoa. During his student years he became interested in music, influenced by artists such as Atahualpa Yupanqui and Violeta Parra. Following in their footsteps, Laboa would also identify himself as a “political artist”. During the 1960s, along with other Basque artists, he founded the cultural group Ez Dok Amairu (“There is no 13”), which in many ways wanted […]

A composer from Liechtenstein

A man who showed exceptional musical talent at an early age. No one knows Liechtenstein and if you ask a person who grew up here about famous people from this country, finding an answer will be very difficult. It is not easy to think of a musician from Liechtenstein. Even the results shown on Google are frustrating. Not only are there just a few results but there was only one name I have heard before: Josef Rheinberger. Now, we have learned that famous people from Liechtenstein are as hard to find as cheese from Madeira, we can look at why I actually know this person. He was born in Liechtenstein, to be exact in Vaduz on the 17th of March […]

The sound of home

Two places connected to the sea. The water splashes against the rocks. The wind whistles over the boats. Both Egmond and Madeira, two places connected to the sea. I come from a little village in the Netherlands named Egmond aan den Hoef, yes that complicated, just try to say that name out loud. Same as Madeira the sea is one of the most important features of this place. The sand turned into rocks, the dunes into mountains. There is no other place like home, but along the way of life, the feeling of that word changes. For me home is not my home village but is the people and culture, for me most of all it’s the arts and freedom. […]

Mérito as usual

Funchal vs. Vaduz

My hometown Vaduz is really different from Funchal. I live in the capital city of Liechtenstein, a town called Vaduz. Liechtenstein itself is smaller than Madeira and Vaduz is also a lot smaller than Funchal. Vaduz has about 5,500 inhabitants and Funchal has got about 110,000. Similarities are hard to find, because the size of the towns are very different, also because of the climate. Funchal is located near the ocean with a lot of humidity and it’s always very warm. Vaduz is a lot colder and it also rains a lot there and it’s not humid at all. But there are also similarities like the tourism and the university. A big part of Vaduz is the tourism. There are […]

Embracing a city

When I think about Amsterdam, I think about the sensory experiences of the city. The sound of tourists’ suitcases rolling over cobblestones, the penetrating smell when you pass a coffee shop in one of the alleyways or the rain on your skin when you’re cycling to the other side of town. I think about crowded cafes when our football team plays. How whole streets turn orange, our national color, and the excitement on people’s faces. How people cheer when our team scores and how the cafes turn to silent mumbling and cursing when the other team scores. How you can’t get out of these places without having had a beer shower or being hugged by random strangers when the orange […]

A small Dutch village

Smell the freshly cut grass, look at the swallows and make a trip on the tractor. Kolderveen is an extremely small village where you can find a lot of cows, horses, tourists and many seniors on electric bicycles. Literally, Kolderveen consists of only one street which is almost 2,5 km long. I think with around 200 inhabitants there live many more cows and horses then people. The Netherlands has twelve provinces, Kolderveen belongs to the province Drenthe which lies in the north of the Netherlands. Three of the provinces , included Drenthe, in the north of the Netherlands are well known because of the meadows, farms and sober people compared with the environment of the four biggest cities called the […]

More cows than people

A hidden region between some alpine mountains. On first sight, the Bregenzerwald may seem a bit boring, but well, it isn’t. We got so much more to offer than just cows and cheese, although these are deeply connected to our cultural life. This article should be about my ‘hometown’ and yes, Alberschwende is my ‘hometown’, but it’s actually a small village, inside the Bregenzerwald region, with about 3.300 people living there. Even though I’m not really the biggest fan of Alberschwende there are a few things worth mentioning. The most popular thing of ours may be the ‘KulturKäsKlatsch'”, which could be translated into ‘CultureCheeseClub’. The ‘KäsKlatsch’ takes place every Thursday next to our church. By the way, right behind the […]

My hometown, Vaduz

The capital city of a small country in the heart of Europe. My hometown is called Vaduz and it’s the capital city of Liechtenstein. Liechtenstein has about 38.000 inhabitants and in Vaduz live about 5.500 people. It’s also the town where the royal family of Liechtenstein lives. The royal family lives in the castle, which is located in the city center of Vaduz, although it’s located a little higher than the rest of the houses. We do also have 3 museums in Vaduz: the historical museum, the Hilti art foundation, and the art museum. The art museum and the Hilti art foundation contain a lot of artworks which belong to the royal family of Liechtenstein. There’s also a city train […]

Bonn, a city for everyone

A city for everyone no matter if you like celebrating or relaxing. Hello everyone and kind regards from Madeira, my name is Anne Schroeder and at the moment I’m staying in Madeira to do a voluntary service. Before I came to Madeira I lived in Bonn, which is a city in Germany that I’ll try to present to you through this text. Perhaps you have already heard of Bonn since it is one of the oldest cities in Germany and it was the capital of Germany from 1949 -1990. Although nowadays Berlin is the capital of Germany, Bonn is a big city which has around 322.125 inhabitants and many places to discover. First, there is a beautiful shopping street in the […]

Barcelona, my home city

Barcelona, attractive for everyone I am a city girl. I have lived all my life in the heart of Barcelona, watching the Sagrada Familia from my window and born in one of the most beautiful Art Nouveau buildings in the city, Sant Pau hospital. In Barcelona you can find art and history along with modernity and diversification. In the city you can stroll through modern neighborhoods, such as Poble Nou, full of new construction. On the top of that, the historic centre of Barcelona is a beautiful medieval area: the Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic). Full of streets with interesting details, squares with history and famous churches. The geographical area, the food and the climate of Barcelona are some of the […]
