Dia do estudante

Summer in France

Let me talk about Bretagne. This region is located in the north-west part of France, just in front of the Atlantic Ocean and the Manche. It is basically the only place in France where the summer heat is still bearable nowadays. The landscapes are amazing: promenade along the sea, feet on the sand but also the countryside with beautiful vegetation and forests. You can also discover the typical houses in this region, all-white or in stones with slates roof. If you like history and magic, I advise you to walk in the Brocéliande forest. Every kid in France knows it thanks to the stories about King Arthur, the knights of the round table and Merlin the enchanter. If you prefer […]

COVID-19 e o ambiente

A Summer in Iceland

If you find yourself in Iceland during the summer months, you will be spoilt for choice as there are plenty of activities available, helped by the extended daylight hours. After the long, dark nights of the winter, Icelanders look forward to the summer and make the most of the opportunity to spend time with family and friends in the great outdoors.  There are no shortage of festivities for you to take part in during this time of year. Independence Day, on 17th of June, is a nationwide celebration. A 17th June party is also around the time when Icelanders might dust off their old barbecues, and serve up some of their famous hot dogs, SS Pylsur.  Mid- to late-June is […]

Although Liechtenstein is tiny, on its 160 square kilometers area there are still a lot of activities you can do in summer. One of the most prominent and popular activities in summer is to go hiking in Malbun. Malbun is part of the municipality of Triesenberg, a town the lies above the Rhein-Valley and above most of the other towns of Liechtenstein. Malbun lies at about 1600 meters above the sea. It offers many many different routes to go hiking. The hikes can take you up to the most beautiful mountains, giving you the most astonishing views you can imagine.

Summer in Bonn

The former capital of Western Germany. Geographically, it lays in the western part of Germany and about 300 000 people live there.   In summer you can do lots of exciting things there.  For example, you can go to a swimming pool and Picknick there with your friends. If you rather swim in a natural lake you can drive to the Steinbachtalsperre which is about 45 minutes away. Besides that, you could also take a walk along the Rhine River and later on play football in the Rheinaue or eat some barbecue. The Rheinaue is a big park around the river initially created for the national garden show in 1979.  This year, as we celebrate the European Championship, you can also […]

Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle is one of the most prominent monuments in Scotland. It stands on Castle Rock and is the country’s most visited tourist attraction. The castle is located in the Old Town of Edinburgh. It was built on a large volcanic rock, which gives it a brilliant defensive location as the walls are either sheer cliffs or steep hills.  The history of Castle Rock began in the Iron Age, 2nd century AD, where there was a settlement, although the nature of this is not known. The royal castle can be dated back to the 12th century during the reign of David I. It continued to be a royal residence up until 1633 when the royal presence began to decline and […]

EU: elections and the future

In a short time, it will be May 23-26, time for the next elections for the European Parliament. These elections are especially important, as they concern the future of Europe and its standing towards important subjects such as work, security, migration and climate change, some of the most discussed topics, be it in global or local politics. Topics which have a huge influence on our future and well-being in said future. These elections may also mark an important turning point, seeing as the European Union is trying, and often struggling, to fight against the apathy of its citizens and the strong populist tide many countries seem to find themselves in. The situation in my country, Germany, may be described as […]

Elections and the future of the EU

Europe is going through quite a difficult period; facing turbulent times and big important questions coming along forces the EU to think how it is going to shape its future. What kind of solutions it will it be able to make and how well will they work eventually. The European Union has survived before, so now it just needs to focus on solving problems in a innovative way and try to keep people trusting and believing on the work of Union. Europe has to be able to react quickly for the changing reality and to turn the challenges in to possibilities. This next citation is about the motto of the EU (”United in diversity”) and so, according to the European […]

Election time

The occasion for a young Italian man to discuss about European unity. In this exact historical moment Italy is facing some troubles on the road to European unity: year by year too many governments have risen to power, each of them ruled by different parties and political figures, sometimes with diametrically opposed ideas about how to deal with Europe and its politics. Now more than ever, it is essential to work towards unity; in a world where the powers become bigger and more centralized there’s no space for fishes that swim alone. Moreover the European dream is not anymore something unavailable and far from our reality, it is slowly happening in front of our eyes, and an initiative such as […]

Europe for me

Europe doesn’t mean only a couple of countries, it is more than that. Members of the European Parliament are elected every five years and this year in May will be the next election. As a transnational parliament with directly elected members, the European Parliament is unique in the world. The institution represents the interests of the EU citizen at an European level. The Parliament elects the President of the European Commission and appoints the Commissioners (as a college). There is more scepticism in the Netherlands about what Europe is and if it is necessary to be in the European Union. In general the Netherlands are positive about Europe but the well-known migration discussion is still a big deal for some […]

European elections and the future

This year my country celebrates 15 years of being a member of European Union. There were a lot of changes in Poland during that time – in my opinion mostly good ones. And thanks to it I could become an EVS volunteer in Madeira. Being a part of the European Union brought many advantages for young people who can now study or volunteer abroad. My parents didn’t have this opportunity and they are happy that I could go abroad thanks to the Erasmus+ program. In my opinion it’s very important for young people to get to know other cultures, learn languages, meet people from different countries, get experience in new areas. When they learn and get another point of view […]

Liechtenstein and the EU

As you may or may not know Liechtenstein isn‘t actually in the European Union. Together with Norway and Iceland we belong to the European Economic Area. Liechtenstein joined the EEA in 1995, after becoming a full member of the EFTA (European free trade association) in 1991. Joining the EEA, also obliged Liechtenstein to apply some European Union laws because they are considered EEA relevant. There is some further cooperation with the EU via Switzerland as Liechtenstein is highly integrated with the Swiss economy (including using the Swiss francs). There are further agreements between Liechtenstein and the EU, on matters such as the Schengen agreement, taxation for savings and there are ongoing talks on combating fraud and exchanging information on tax matters.
