A brief history of Croatia

Croatia is situated between central and southeast Europe, with a population of around 4 million. There is lots of evidence of Croatia being populated during the prehistoric period, fossils of Neanderthals have been found in the north of the country and the most famous place is in Krapina, where over eight hundred fossils were found. In 9 AD Croatia became a part of the Roman Empire, until the 7th century when the Avar and Croat peoples invaded and destroyed most of the Roman towns. The Roman survivors fled to the coast, islands and mountains. Dubrovnik, a city on the southern coast of the country, was established by these survivors. Duke Branimir, who received recognition from the Pope John VIII, was […]

The history of one Balkan state

The history of the first Bulgarian state dates back to the 7th century. Bulgaria was founded by Asparukh in 681. The Christianisation of the state began at the end of the 9th century. At the beginning of the 11th century Bulgaria was conquered by Byzantium. After more than 100 years, a major uprising restored the Bulgarian state to form the Second Bulgarian Empire. Bulgaria was flourishing over the next two centuries until it disintegrated into two smaller states, which were eventually subjugated by the Ottoman Empire. The Turks eliminated Bulgarian knighthood, deprived Bulgarian citizens of their rights and subordinated the Church to the Patriarch of Constantinople. Bulgaria remained an integral Turkish territory for the next 500 years. A great uprising […]

O financiamento daquele espaço termina no próximo ano.

Portugal defende a ciência aberta

The History of Finland

I chose Finland because it is the most eco-friendly country in the world. This is the outcome based on the EPI: The Environmental Performance Index. It’s a useful tool to measure the green credentials of various countries around the world. The EPI assesses a country’s eco-performance across nine categories: agriculture, air quality, biodiversity and habitat, climate and energy, forests, fisheries, health impacts, water resources, and water and sanitation. Now the question I ask myself is how this came to be? What is the reason that they excel in this field? Why do they manage to prioritize this green quest, where other countries fail to do so? And more importantly, can we learn something from them? It all boils down to […]

Musical education

I studied in Puolalanmäki Upper Secondary School for three years and graduated in 2018. It’s one of the Upper secondary schools in Turku, which is a city on the southwest coast of Finland. The main reason why I wanted to apply to Puolalanmäki was that the school offers a great music oriented programme. The programme also ended up being the reason why I was motivated to go to school every day. Alongside normal subjects I had a lot of music courses, for example music history, theory, singing lessons and classes on how to express yourself with music and how to get better in performing songs. I was one of the singers in our school’s choir, which consisted of more than […]

My old school: HLW Rankweil

The “HLW Rankweil”, as it’s called, is located in Rankweil, Austria and was founded in 1977. The school I’m writing about is my old high school. At the moment there are around 65 teachers and 480 students, most of them being girls. It takes five years to finish and graduate from this school. This school is not like a normal high school, the correct translation of the name is: school and college of management and services industries. This means that in addition to general education it provides a technical and vocational training in subject-related theoretical and business-oriented subjects. The essential objectives are: personal growth and development, creativity, teamwork, communicative skills in several languages and practical experience. After this school you […]

My University

I studied at the University of Reading for three years. My degree was in History and Politics. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. Reading is in Berkshire which is about a thirty minute train ride from London Paddington. The University itself has some significant history attached to it. It was formerly part of Oxford University’s Christ Church College but was granted independence to produce its own degrees by a Royal Charter from King George V. It was also the first university to appoint a woman as a chair at an English University level-institution in 1912. The University also boasts having the renowned Twentieth Century composer Gustav Holst as a Professor of music.  Reading University can also proclaim one of the […]
