Romance with the Mountains

I am in the middle of my EVS project and I feel hungrier and hungrier of discovering Madeira and people all around me. Is so many views to see, kilometres to walk and topics to talk about. My brain has already registered many gorgeous memories, mostly during my free time when I was among the nature, especially in the mountains. As said Peter Croft, Canadian rock climber and mountaineer: There is such good stuff in the mountains. This stuff is free and you can take it for free. Rock star says that his first love is guitar, Sailor´s heart belong to the Ocean, and I can say that Mountains are my lover. As a teenager I was very active scout, […]

Architectural heritage

You can vote in referendum, write a petition or have a deep discussion with councillor about architecture. Don´t let your heritage desapear. Every single day, when I am walking around the down town of FunchaI I can see hundreds of buildings in poor conditions. Sometimes I am afraid of going next to them – nobody wants to be hit by felling down layers. The residents of that places are cats and homeless people, who risks a lot, because the God only knows when they may collapse. In the effect of huge emigration of Madeiran, people started to leaving their properties and houses without care. The Portuguese low is saying that if you don´t take response for your building, for the […]

Expectations versus reality

As Madeira is not the first Portuguese island which I visited, I knew what I should expect here. Before coming to Madeira I spend part of my studies on Erasmus exchange program in Azores and because of that I did not think ‘always expect unexpected’. When I arrived I was not surprised by the Madeiran weather, climate, high humidity, cockroaches, lizards, and very narrow streets. People were also very nice and the city of Funchal seemed like a safe place. However, what surprised me at first was that Funchal is much bigger and it hosts much more tourists that I thought. That is why, in my opinion, people here are more open to other cultures. Also because of that, many […]

How to stay motivated

Hard to believe, but even when you live in Madeira after some time your life eventually becomes “normal” You stop choosing to walk by the ocean, because that route it’s longer; you get stuck in a rut when it comes to work; you feel like you’re just doing the same thing every weekend and in your free time and you think you’ll never going to actually learn Portuguese. Is there a way out of this dead end? Well yes, there is, but you need to make an effort. I realized I need to create a “life” outside of my usual surroundings, separate from work, colleagues and the residence. The easiest way to do it is by making new friends among […]

A language of Camões

Why in my homeland, Poland, more and more people start to learn Portuguese? Maybe because it sounds like a mixture of Russian and Spanish? Maybe because it is spoken by around 215 million of people? Maybe because we are just passionate about your country? In Poland there is only one official language and guess what? It is used as an official spoken language only there. So this is one of the possible reasons why many Poles want to learn other languages. Let’s be brutally honest: if some tourists visits our country we need to speak other languages to them because otherwise, they would be terrified. For foreigners, it is even hard to pronounce ‘sorry’ or ‘thank you’ in my mothertongue. […]

I thought that Madeira has become in another home to me. Today I was in Porto Santo, but it wasn´t an enjoyable trip along the island, even I shouldn’t be there, I just was there because the turbulence in a trip with Madeira island as the destiny. This happened as the end of my holidays and basically it was one of the three things that makes me think about my project (because I had too much time to think about it as the pilot was trying to land). The first the time was when I arrived at Spain and after eating Paella (my favorite Spanish plate) I told my family the history of my experience. It wasn’t just a tell, […]

Wanderlust

The pros and cons of long hiking Being a perfectionist and a collector (both terrible features), I like to see things through – once I undertake a given task or a project, I’m determined to finish it in 100%. Here, on Madeira, one of those little quests of mine is to walk all the hiking trails listed by the website I always use to consult the trips. I mark every finished trail on my map of the island and each new line drawn on it gives my a sort of perverted joy only weirdos like me would understand. Needless to say, the more lines marked on the map at the end of the day, the merrier. I try to combine […]

We are all one big family

You can learn a lot about different cultures, traditional cuisine and how to rid yourself of stereotypes. Living in a student residence can be annoying, especially when it is overloaded with people or for example the kitchen on the ground floor does not work and all students start to use the one on your floor. But despite all the noise, lack of privacy and a rare state of cleanliness in the kitchen I really appreciate my experience of living in our volunteer and student community. We can always share our experiences and learn from each other and count on each other. On one hand you become more social and open-minded but on the other hand you learn how to enjoy […]

Hiking together

What if we all (volunteers, Erasmus students, international students and madeiran students) could go hiking together? This idea has stuck in my head since long time. It would be so perfect to have the possibility to go out in the nature, not depending on when and where the few public buses could drive you at the weekend. There are just a few options to gain this freedom of self-determined hiking. Renting a car together with friends, going with a friend who has a car or hitchhike. Although every of these options has its benefits the disadvantages are highly considerable, especially when you want to hike with more than 5 people. So as I heard about the guided nature walks Aauma […]

Island Oddities

The strange case of the Principality of Pontinha. Due to their isolated nature, island nations tend to exhibit a heightened sense of the bizarre. I am well aware of this from my home country, with its Byzantine cultural norms and eccentric Monarchy. Madeira is no different, a notable example being the existence of the Principality of Pontinha. Founded by the now Dom Renato Barros I, a former art teacher, Pontinha is a micronation based around an islet on Funchal’s harbour. It was purchased for just shy of £20,000 from the Blandy family, who had themselves purchased the land from the city of Funchal in order to fund a redevelopment of the port in 1903. Barros himself has speculated that if […]

A French Guy in Funchal: The Sequel

My time here on Madeira Island stays very nice, tiring but increasingly interesting. Let’s talk about another subject than food, that is to say food, and two famous pastries in all Portugal! My pleasure, shared I’m pretty sure by many other people, is eating pastries, all bakeries Portuguese have! And the one I could go for from France to Portugal by foot or even by swimming to enjoy is definitely “Pastéis de nata”. This is a little eggs flan tartlet, sold in other countries in a sad way in supermarkets when It’s not artisanal. Indeed I tasted it in France just before coming to Madeira and to Portugal, and that wasn’t such a nice moment. Because when It’s industrial you […]

Descarrilar

— Livro do desassossego, Fernando Pessoa. Prólogo: Sem destino continuei a caminhada, o meu objectivo vago… Tentando dissipar a ansiedade construída no meu peito.
