Joseph Conrad

A Polish-British writer, most famous for Heart of Darkness (1899). Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski is known rather as Joseph Conrad which is a combination of his two names. He went to Marseilles as a seventeen-year-old boy to work as a sailor. When he returned from his voyages to the Caribbean and South America, he had troubles with his citizenship, as a resident of the Russian Empire, he was obligated to do military service. Without permission from the Russian authorities to serve on French ships, Joseph fell into debts and consequently he attempted to commit suicide. Later on, he went to Great Britain and began serving in the British merchant navy. After a few years, he received the rank of captain […]

Half open curtains

I’ll talk about the Belgian writer Herman Brusselmans. Why him? To reply in his own style: because this dickpick is probably the most f*cking interesting choice of them all. That’s right. I didn’t choose him because his oeuvre is close to my heart. Neither his high pitched literary style. Still, he is one of the greatest writers of Belgium. How did this come to be? Well, to start with, he is (unlike many colleagues) in front of the media. He keeps himself in the picture through talk shows and columns, where he likes to mock other celebrities and comments on certain situations. This provocative talk is also very typical for his books. The overall style elements are a Highly autobiographical […]

He has written four novels, Gewapende Man (2010), Wild (2011), Luchtvissers (2013) en Een Onbarmhartig Pad (2018). Apart from being a writer, he is also a music teacher at the high school I went to in the Netherlands. He is a teacher full of energy, full of empathy for his students and with a great sense of humor. He […]

Beyond reality

Giorgio de Chirico and his metaphysical painting as a breath of fresh air in a grey set. Beyond the empirical sensorial experience there is something else, a thin layer that is not above reality, neither below, behind or inside, but lives “within” it. These two layers influence themselves, and sometimes our limits break, so that we can taste a slice of this alternative world. Giorgio de Chirico, father of Italian metaphysical painting, didn’t try to express anything really new. Since humanity became capable of being aware of itself, it had to face the supernatural, it had to deal with those elements that fly away from our sight, which can sometimes be essential for our being, if not life changing. Is […]

Sonia Delaunay

Her art is remarkable, especially the first period of her work with this kind of cubism, it is even more astonishing if you keep in mind that this was painted before the art of Mondrian. Born in 1885 in Ukraine, Sophia (her first name) will spend her childhood in St. Petersburg then in Germany with her uncle. She studied art and drawing in Karlsruhe in Germany until 1905. At this time she decided to move on to Paris. In Paris she studied art at the Académie de La Palette and spent a lot of time in art galleries. Her work was influenced by the Fauve movement and the Post-impressionist of Henri Rousseau or Van Gogh. After a first marriage of […]

Gustav Klimt

Gustav Klimt, born in July 1862, is an Austrian painter and one of the most famous representatives of Viennese Art Nouveau. He was born and raised in Vienna, where he lived with his six siblings and his parents. Because of a studentship he was able to study from 1876 until 1883 at the Vienna School of Decorative Arts. After University he opened an independent studio specializing in the execution of mural paintings. His early work had a classical style that was typical of late 19th century academic painting, as can be seen in his murals for the Vienna Burgtheater. In 1897 Klimt´s mature style emerged and he founded the Vienna Sezession, a group of painters who revolted against academic art […]

The European project in the future

The future of the European Project depends on our acts now. As a young European citizen who has already participated in projects provided by the European Union, I know that the best way to support the European Project growth is taking part in diversified programmes such as studying abroad, voluntary service or any kinds of internships. These experiences give a new perspective for the future of young people. Mobility does not pose any difficulties anymore because it is a part of the projects mentioned above. Moreover, we are eager to apply for jobs abroad, to travel and stay in touch with all the people we have  met along our way. All the connections between the people and the sense of […]

Freedom is participation!

As european citizens, we all have the responsibility to take care of the EU and contribute to its success, development and improvement.  The EU is not only an International Organization of States, it is a political and economical union based on the common interests, necessities, rights and obligations of all their citizens. It has been created to generate services and to manage and solve common problems of the European States in order to offer better life conditions to the citizens of this geopolitical area.  For this reason, the europeans have inherited the duty to participate actively towards the growth of the EU.  We are required to exercise our rights such as voting in the EU elections, to invest in its […]

Citizen of the EU

I’m proud and happy to be part of EU. Finland joined the EU in 1995 together with Sweden and Austria. It gives me so many opportunities, one of them, which I’m experiencing right now: the European voluntary service. What can I do to help the EU to survive and grow better? An obvious way is voting. It’s important to vote in your own country’s elections, and in EU elections. Decisions and changes made in one country might lead to other countries making the same kind of changes, in better direction. What I really like about EU, is that the borders are open. It makes travelling easy, and motivates me to travel more and see the world. That’s how EU brings […]

What can I do for the EU?

In these times it is so important to be a part of our society and to participate in the European Union. But what can we do for the European Union? At first, we can vote. All citizens of the European Union have a suffrage and we have to use it. Everyone can complain again about the politic of the EU but you can be an active part of it. And I think that most people in Germany know this. Because the voter turnout was 61,4 % in Germany for the elections to the European Parliament in 2019. And I was surprised that only 10.9% of the German voted for right populists. So, I think we are doing well in Germany. […]

A Europe of my grandchildren

How can we ensure the future of the European Project in the coming decades? Firstly, I doubt that there will be a European Project for my grandchildren (if I have any at all?) The problem is divided into certain reasons of why there might not be a future. If I were to have grandchildren and they were British citizens (unless I marry a someone from the EU 27 or if my children marry someone from the EU) then I do not think they will have access to European Citizenship. Brexit is the reason for this. My grandchildren would not be concerned necessarily with the European project because I believe that the UK by my estimations and how things are going […]
