Together we can do better!

In May, the call for European elections is opening and all European citizens are needed to express their desire to get involved in politics. These are not simple elections, this is an international event in which we are involved as protagonists because the future of the European Union depends on us. The EU is experiencing a moment of crisis due to the national political transformations that are happening, the international emergency related to the migratory fluxes that are occurring and the lack of common intents between the countries that constitute the monetary and economic Union. The number of populist parties that are rising in power in national contexts is increasing as a result of the boom in nationalism, economic autarky […]

Expressões que deviam ser proibidas

Copo com água? Literalmente? Norte-americano? Perca?

United EU, a project by Thomas More

To be honest, writing about the importance of the next election in the European Parliament is really tough. Even though I have always been interested in politics, if you do not do research on your own, you might not know a lot about EU-politics. For me the next elections are going to be quite important in the sense of which parties will allow what kind of national policy. In theory the word “Öxit” used to exist but has not been used since at least two years. Austria knows it would be nothing without the EU and since this knowledge arrived in peoples heads, even the right wing party FPÖ stopped using this topic for their populism. Since Madeira is what […]

France and the european elections

About the European project and the next elections, France is quite divided, such as numerous countries in the Union. Firstly, about the elections for the European Parliament, France is not really involved, the people don’t really care about this election, this one of the elections with the highest rate of people who don’t vote. And this is for many reasons, first because Brussels and the Parliament always seem to be far away from the National needs. There is also a big lack of trust in the European institution. Like in almost all the European countries people are afraid to lose political power and ability to take some decision in profit of the European Parliament. But this election is still important, […]

May 2019 and the future of the EU!

The European elections in May 2019 will have a direct impact on our life. The European Parliament is the only supranational, democratically elected parliament in the world. All adult EU citizens will have an opportunity to select who will represent them and how Europe will act in the coming years. The European Union currently consists of 28 member states and is largely viewed as a cornerstone of European stability and prosperity, however, many EU countries have faced considerable economic difficulties. The EU has had to deal with a series of crises in these last few years: the Brexit negotiations, the trade dispute with the United States, the growth of right-wing populist movements, a democracy and rule-of-law concerns in Poland (since […]

A. Guterres e alterações climáticas

Britain, the EU and the future!

To summarise the intricacies and complexities of European Union is no mean feat, especially to do so in roughly 200 words. The European Union is facing its most difficult challenge to date as people in the member states are increasingly becoming apathetic or down right adversarial towards the EU. With the situation of Brexit being a predominant political problem, that will be felt by most people throughout the continent and to the rest of the world, the EU will have to weather this storm if it is to maintain the integrity and diplomatic relations with the rest of the union member states. The EU needs to be strong when confronting Britain as they have to show other countries that leaving […]

Agustín Ibarrola Goikoetxea

Agustín Ibarrola Goikoetxea is a basque painter and sculptor. He began his relationship with painting in a self-taught way (at age 16 he made his first exhibition) and in 1948 the Council of Biscay granted him a scholarship, so he could move to Madrid to continue his studies in the workshop of Daniel Vázquez Díaz, until 1955. With him he made his first steps into Cubism. In 1950 he met another artist who had great influence on his production and his artistic mentality, the Basque sculptor Jorge Oteiza; with him he was introduced to the division and analysis of the space characteristic from constructivism. He also learned from Oteiza the mentality of joint artistic creation, where numerous artists and different […]

Friedensreich Hundertwasser

If you have already visited Vienna, I’m sure you have seen some colorful buildings in weird shapes.   All these art works were done by one of my favourite Austrian painters: Friedensreich Hundertwasser Regentag Dunkelbunt. His name tells us already a lot about him, it’s maybe even more exotic than his style of art. He was born as Friedrich Stowasser but changed it in 1949 and added some words. “Hundertwasser” is because of a Slavic word, “Regentag” means rainy day and “Dunkelbunt” a colorful dark. Hundertwasser was born on the 15 of December 1928 in Vienna and he spent the first period of his life there. During 1943, about 69 of his Jewish relations – on the side of his […]

Francis Bacon

Francis Bacon in my opinion is one of the greatest painters ever to put brush to canvas. His work would completely shock, scare and amaze those who would gaze upon it. His work would be etched upon the British consciousness after the Second World War. Coming out of the horrific and devastating war, Bacon’s paintings would reflect not only his consciousness but he would tap into the dark and unnerving subconscious of the people. He was an Englishman who was brought up in Ireland during in his formative years. His childhood was a very tough and harrowing one,  he suffered from severe asthma and that meant he was a recluse and very shy. Additionally, growing up with a strict protestant […]

Caspar David Friedrich

Caspar David Friedrich, born on the 5th of September 1774, was a German Romantic landscape painter of the 19th century and is, nowadays, regarded as the most important German artist of his generation. His best-known paintings consist of allegorical landscapes, featuring contemplative figures, silhouettes against night skies, fog, barren trees, as well as Gothic ruins. His chosen subjects prove his interest in the contemplation of nature and his emotional approach towards nature. This approach was highly influenced by the social current in his time, a society which grew disillusioned to the materialism of past generations and sought sense in the focus of spirituality, expressed through images of the natural, “divine” world. While Friedrich’s master pieces brought him great renown early […]

Pioneer in a world of abstract art

Using simple elements like horizontal and vertical lines and primary colours Piet Mondrian created pieces that have been discussed by many people. Even though his last works are abstract, he has not always been an abstract painter. His arts career started shortly after primary school. From this moment he started taking art classes and had many different teachers. After failing a qualification test for an arts school because of the subject ‘anatomy’, Mondrian started to focus on the painting of landscapes. In the following years his painting style was influenced by other painters like Van Gogh and Matisse. His style shifted from realistic to more expressive, his lines became harsher and colours more dramatic. This change in style became even […]

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born in 1864 near Toulouse (Albi) in the South of France. He was from an aristocratic family. As he was very young, it appeared that Toulouse was suffering from a congenital illness due to his parents being closely related genetically. In such a wealthy family it was very common to marry between first cousins in order to protect the patrimony. This illness known as Pycnodysostosis (nowadays commonly called Toulouse-Lautrec syndrome) weakened his bones. Because of two serious horse-riding accidents, his legs stopped growing, letting him for the rest of his life with the legs of a child. Unable to pursue his original equestrian passion, he started to take art lessons. At the time of his arrival […]
