King Dom Carlos

He became king in 1889 which was a time of crisis. Dom Carlos might have not been the last king on the throne of Portugal and the Algarve but his rule is often associated with the end of the monarchy. The image of the Portuguese monarchy was severely damaged after the government showed weakness facing the British. From today’s view, you might say that Dom Carlos had no great talent in politics, as he is still blamed for the end of the Portuguese monarchy. It did not make it easier to seem like a confident king. Instead, the population noticed quite fast that he could not stand its ground against the British Empire. Portugal’s plan was to have sovereignty over […]

King Manuel I of Portugal

The period of his reign was one of the finest times in the history of Portugal. Walking around Funchal you could have came across a square called “Largo Dom Manuel I” (eng. “Square of King Manuel I”) which is located near Sé Cathedral or you could have heard about an architectural style called ‘mannueline’ visible in many buildings in the city. All this reminds us of the times of reign of one of the most famous kings of Portugal, Manuel I also known as the Fortunate (port. o Afortunado) had as the period of his reign 1495-1521. During this time Funchal received city rights (1508) and became an important commercial port in the map of the world. We can even […]

King Sebastian of Portugal

Probably one of the most famous kings in Portuguese history. King Sebastian of Portugal (20 January 1554 – 4 August 1578) is very popular amongst us volunteers so that it took me a little discussion so that I am finally the one who writes about “the desired”. But why is he so famous? Was it because he invited the Jesuit order in 1569 to the island of Madeira after a huge French privateer attack in 1566 where French soldiers robbed and plundered the archipelago? Or because he was the youngest king Portugal ever had, who became king with just 3 years because his father Prince John died before he was born, his mother Joanna of Spain returned shortly after his […]

D. Maria I – The crazy Queen

D.Maria I was very religious and got completely crazy during her lifetime. Maria Francisca Isabel Josefa Antónia Gertrudes Rita Joana (Maria I) was the daughter of José I de Portugal and Mariana Victoria of Spain. Maria was born in 1734 and grew up with her sisters at the court in Lisbon. They seemed to have a good life, they were loved by their father and they did a lot of things, like riding horses, learning to draw and read French and Latin. But things happened in Maria´s lifetime that slowly drove her crazy. For example the earthquake in Lisbon, which killed thousands of people. She had to marry her uncle (at the age of 17) and apart from that she […]

Judaism in Madeira

A brief exploration of the hidden history of Jewish people on the island of Madeira. For as long as Madeira has existed as a territory under Portuguese control there has been a notable, if hidden, Jewish population living on the island. During the time following the island’s discovery this primarily comprised of Crypto-Jews, who hid their faith publicly due to the ongoing Spanish Inquisition. The city of Funchal was established in 1508, less than 20 years after the Alhambra Decree which ordered all practicing Jews to be expelled from Spain. In this context it is interesting that many Portuguese historians speculate that Zarco, the official discoverer of the island and first captain of Funchal, was himself of Crypto-Jewish ancestry. In […]

Access to forests is our privilege?

Levadas – more than two thousands kilometers of irrigation channels, going through Madeira across and along from the top to the bottom of the island. I can only think about walking along the path surrounding levada by green tropical flora, to feel undiscribed calmness. Even more I like to visit them alone without companions, for better exploration. Every single forest has his own story to discover and it depends on us, do we want to hear them or not. Trees are silent witnesses of history. The rest of the oldest kind belonged to Old Tjikko from Swedish Fulufjället National Park, survived more than nine thousand years. They remeber the time before Jesus Christ, the Roman Empire, Inca Empire, two world […]

Polish accent in Funchal

What I found when I started to look for Polish signs in Madeira. There is about 4000 km distance between Madeira and Poland, so it is rather unlikely that these two countries can have a lot in common. However, if you look closely you can find some similarities. One of them are churches and a lot of other signs of Christian faith which are present at every corner. What is more, in the Jesuit’s church we can find a painting of the Divine Mercy based on the devotion initiated by Polish saint nun Faustyna Kowalska and painted by Polish artist. Also in that church we can see a statue of Polish Jesuit – saint Stanisław Kostka, a patron saint of […]

The art of being lost

Before arriving on the project – I didn’t completely know what to expect. Am I going to love it, am I going to hate it? Will I pick up the language easily? What will it be like being a non-native of the place I’m in for the first time in my life? Now that I’m here. I can honestly say I still don’t have the answers to these questions … But I do know one thing, it’s the curiosity of NOT knowing that is spurring me on and igniting the inquisitive flames of my heart to continue upon this journey. I always hated children’s shows like Dora the Explorer – I never thought that I’d be buying her books in […]

Expectations

It has already been a month since I left my hometown in the northeast of France to live this experience of a lifetime in Madeira. How do I feel about that? If anyone would have told me that I would be in Madeira at that time last year, I would have never believed him or her. I was doing my end-of-studies internship in the Ministry of Economy in Luxembourg, and I was expecting, or rather, my parents were expecting me to find a job afterwards. Instead I started working as a volunteer in a non-profit organisation that promotes European values and informs youngsters about all kinds of mobility programmes that exist in the European Union. I was still looking for […]

British Experiences of Iberia

Comparing my first experiences of Iberian life to the British soldiers who arrived in 1807. Upon arriving in Madeira I read The British Soldier in the Peninsular War (G. Daly, Hobart, 2013) in order to learn more about the history of the island. I have compared my experiences to the soldiers who occupied Madeira from 1807. The first thing that struck me upon arrival was the temperate weather and dramatic terrain. Lieutenant Sherer of the Cumberland Regiment was similarly taken, describing the wooded mountains of Portugal as ‘enchanting’. However upon entering the cities the initial optimism of the soldiers turned to revulsion; John Douglas wrote home complaining of poor hygiene and disease in Lisbon. While I have not been to […]
