Rinoceronte-branco extinto?

Karel Appel

The paintings look (a little bit) like child drawings. This man is an internationally renowned Dutch painter, whose paintings look (at least according to critics) like they were painted by a child himself. Also, Karel stated: ´I just mess up something´. Others say this was not completely true, they say there was a big theory behind the paintings. Christiaan Karel Appel was born in 1921 in Amsterdam, he studied there at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. At the academy, he met two other artists with who he became close friends, Corneille and Constant. With these friends and a few others, he founded Cobra in 1948 at an international conference in Paris. This was an international movement of painters and […]

The master among Dutch painters in the Dutch Golden Age. Rembrandt Hamerszoon van Rijn was a Dutch painter, etcher, drawer and art collector. He is considered as one of the greatest painters in European art. Besides, he is the most important Dutch painter of the 17th century. This century is also known as the Dutch Golden Age because Dutch art was one of the most acclaimed in the world in that time. Rembrandt manufactured approximately 300 paintings, 300 etchings and 2000 drawings. These works belong to the Baroque style and were influenced by the Caravaggesque style. Both styles find their origin in Italy and are related to strong emotional expressions and extravagancy even though he has never been to Italy. […]

Sonda japonesa chega a asteróide

Maruja Mallo

Maruja Mallo was first and foremost free. When you think about a famous painter from Spain all the names that come out are masculine. The reason why is not because there are not female Spanish painters, it is because history is not giving them the recognition that they deserve. I am really far from being an art expert, but I know how women have to face challenges due to gender biases, from finding difficulty in training to selling their work and gaining recognition. Maruja Mallo is one of the women that fight for her own place in the world of art of the twentieth century to become one of the most representative figures of the Generation of 27 and one […]

Coming home

What is home for you? Where is home for you? How many homes can you actually have? Does it have to be family? Or can it be friends? I begin with these simple questions for you. Every volunteer has to go to two trainings: an on-arrival training and a mid-term training. Both of them take place on the mainland of Portugal. Most of us enjoy the time. We meet new friends, friends that experience the same but also the total opposite. I was actually lucky to go by myself because I am sure that it has you a whole different impact on you. And of course it is a nice opportunity to leave this island and get to know the […]

Future happens now

In 2015, a company from Hong Kong activated a humanoid robot named Sophia. She, because the robot is considered to be of female gender and is modeled after Audrey Hepburn, was interviewed in tv shows and by international organizations, such as United Nations. Although it is surely a great development, many people expressed their concerns that it may be dangerous for our race. Robot assured that she is only a peaceful creature built to help people, although the concerns escalated even more when for the question if she wants to destroy humans, asked by her creator, Sophia answered “OK. I will destroy humans.” Another controversy aroused this year when Sophia, as the first robot, got a nationality. Now she is […]

Weather changing

I write about November because it was a colder month in Madeira, a month of surprises. First I didn’t expected such a cold weather here. I mean it’s not so cold but it’s quite more than I expected from a semi tropical island. Also I had some troubles because the changing weather like for instance, I went to one levada, it was so sunny but in the middle of the levada it just rained a lot, so basically I walked for 6h under a really annoying rain (oh course I didn’t bring my umbrella). Another big change was the cold water on the beach, and that’s even in the warm days. Since the fact that November is not a touristic […]

Nature Festival on Madeira

Pros and cons of visiting Madeira in autumn In the end of September I had a few friends coming to Madeira from Porto. Naturally, I wanted to show them some of the most iconic views on the island, so I took them to places like Ponta de São Lourenço, Vereda do Larano, Pico do Areeiro. It was quite a shock to see all of them (places, not friends) completely burnt by summer sun, yellow and grey where just a few months ago, in early spring, everything was intensely green and flourishing. Later on I even compared my photos from April and late September and the difference in color is unbelievable. There can be no doubt about it – Madeira is […]

Claustrophobia

I never thought that being and living on the island can be so different from living in the mainland in a bigger agglomeration. But actually it differs a lot and I felt it soon after I came here. This strange feeling of being locked and kept in a small island so that you cannot escape from it so easily in case of any human/natural disaster remain in my subconscious. Everything has limits here and sometimes it can make you feel anxious. I wonder if some people has that inborn will of constantly moving from place to place, just getting into the car or taking a plane and travelling at least for a bit or if it is just a feature […]

Tourism (seen as a tourist)

I am starting my third month in this project, and I have noticed a lot of differences between my home country and Funchal (obviously). The biggest and most noticeable one is perhaps not that this is a Portuguese island, but that it is a touristic island. Tourism is quite deeply entwined in Funchal, which results in some small but noticeable differences. For example, I must have seen over a hundred cafés and restaurants but I have only seen two supermarkets which are at 200 meters apart from each other. You can also go anywhere by bus, but the price is the same no matter how far you want to go. Banana’s and fruits are about as expensive as in my […]
