Mikel Laboa

One of the Basque Country’s most important singer-songwriters Considered the father of Basque music, his music has had an influence on younger generations. His album Bat-Hiru (“One-Three”) was chosen in a reader’s poll by the local newspaper as the greatest Basque album in history. Nearly all of his songs are sung in Basque. Mikel Laboa was born 15 June 1934 in Pasaia, Gipuzkoa. During his student years he became interested in music, influenced by artists such as Atahualpa Yupanqui and Violeta Parra. Following in their footsteps, Laboa would also identify himself as a “political artist”. During the 1960s, along with other Basque artists, he founded the cultural group Ez Dok Amairu (“There is no 13”), which in many ways wanted […]

A composer from Liechtenstein

A man who showed exceptional musical talent at an early age. No one knows Liechtenstein and if you ask a person who grew up here about famous people from this country, finding an answer will be very difficult. It is not easy to think of a musician from Liechtenstein. Even the results shown on Google are frustrating. Not only are there just a few results but there was only one name I have heard before: Josef Rheinberger. Now, we have learned that famous people from Liechtenstein are as hard to find as cheese from Madeira, we can look at why I actually know this person. He was born in Liechtenstein, to be exact in Vaduz on the 17th of March […]

The sound of home

Two places connected to the sea. The water splashes against the rocks. The wind whistles over the boats. Both Egmond and Madeira, two places connected to the sea. I come from a little village in the Netherlands named Egmond aan den Hoef, yes that complicated, just try to say that name out loud. Same as Madeira the sea is one of the most important features of this place. The sand turned into rocks, the dunes into mountains. There is no other place like home, but along the way of life, the feeling of that word changes. For me home is not my home village but is the people and culture, for me most of all it’s the arts and freedom. […]

Funchal vs. Vaduz

My hometown Vaduz is really different from Funchal. I live in the capital city of Liechtenstein, a town called Vaduz. Liechtenstein itself is smaller than Madeira and Vaduz is also a lot smaller than Funchal. Vaduz has about 5,500 inhabitants and Funchal has got about 110,000. Similarities are hard to find, because the size of the towns are very different, also because of the climate. Funchal is located near the ocean with a lot of humidity and it’s always very warm. Vaduz is a lot colder and it also rains a lot there and it’s not humid at all. But there are also similarities like the tourism and the university. A big part of Vaduz is the tourism. There are […]

EU in the Atlantic Ocean?

People on this Island keep things way more ‘chilled’ than we do. This following article will be about some of the major similarities Madeira has in common with the Mainland of the European Union, but also some of the most interesting differences for me, compared to my hometown in Austria. Starting with some of the things which appear very different in Austria. First off, the mentality the people have on this island is about 180 degrees turned from the one the people in my area have. There is a famous saying, ‘Schaffa, schaffa, Hüsle bua!’ which means translated into English ‘Work and do not stop working until you can build a house and get a family’. In these past two […]

Bonn, a city for everyone

A city for everyone no matter if you like celebrating or relaxing. Hello everyone and kind regards from Madeira, my name is Anne Schroeder and at the moment I’m staying in Madeira to do a voluntary service. Before I came to Madeira I lived in Bonn, which is a city in Germany that I’ll try to present to you through this text. Perhaps you have already heard of Bonn since it is one of the oldest cities in Germany and it was the capital of Germany from 1949 -1990. Although nowadays Berlin is the capital of Germany, Bonn is a big city which has around 322.125 inhabitants and many places to discover. First, there is a beautiful shopping street in the […]

Barcelona, my home city

Barcelona, attractive for everyone I am a city girl. I have lived all my life in the heart of Barcelona, watching the Sagrada Familia from my window and born in one of the most beautiful Art Nouveau buildings in the city, Sant Pau hospital. In Barcelona you can find art and history along with modernity and diversification. In the city you can stroll through modern neighborhoods, such as Poble Nou, full of new construction. On the top of that, the historic centre of Barcelona is a beautiful medieval area: the Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic). Full of streets with interesting details, squares with history and famous churches. The geographical area, the food and the climate of Barcelona are some of the […]

Bludenz: my home before Madeira

About the life in a small town between alps. Since I am born I life in Bludenz, which is a small town in the western part of Austria. With 15.000 inhabitants it is the smallest town of the federal state Vorarlberg. It has an area from 29,94 km², an elevation of 588 meter and it lies at the meeting point of five valleys. During summer Bludenz is a popular hiking and mountain-biking resort. In the Brandnertal for example there are a lot of different tours and since 2014 there is also a single trail on the Muttersberg. Bludenz is also a great place to stay if you like hiking. It is the meeting point of several valleys as e.g. Walgau, […]

Meet Vaduz, Liechtenstein

Vaduz is the capital city of Liechtenstein, a small country between Austria and Switzerland and also my home. Liechtenstein is a very small country so its cities are also very small. Liechtenstein has almost 38000 inhabitants and the whole country has only 160km². Although Vaduz is the capital city, it is not the city with the greatest number of inhabitants. Schaan, the city next to Vaduz has more inhabitants. Vaduz has many beautiful spots even though it is very small compared to other cities. Vaduz is the city with the castle in which the Prince lives with his family. Underneath the castle is the “Städtle”, the city center with shops and the government building. It`s where you can also find […]

Marianne Thieme

At the front of the European Animal and environmental rights. Animal and environmental rights are a big topic in the Netherlands. The country is the first country in the world with a political party with among its main goals animal- and environmentally friendly policy. Although the Party for the Animals considers itself to be a testimony party – a party which does not seek to gain political power but focuses on its principles and thereby influencing other parties – the party is gaining more followers every year. Last March during the municipal elections in the capital Amsterdam the party went from 12 seats to 33 seats. Represented in the parliament, senate and European parliament, the party is also becoming more […]

Jordi Pujol

He kept hidden funds in tax havens for more than three decades. In the last years in Spain have been uncovered many cases of corruption among politicians of different parties. One of the most scandalous committed frauds is leaded by Pujols’ family. Jordi Pujol is a Spanish politician considered a reference and historical leader of the region of Catalonia. When democracy was established in Spain, he won the first Catalan parliamentary elections and remained in the position for 23 years widely supported by the voters. He was the founder of Convergència Democràtica and he is a symbol of Catalan nationalism. But his lasts declarations were not closely related to the independence of Catalonia. He was compelled to confess that he […]
