A small man who was a great king. In XIV century Poland had a king of Piast dynasty, who was famous because of his height. Wladyslaw became the King at the age of 52 years old and his way to achieve this position wasn’t easy. He was the middle son of Kazimierz I Kujawski, his two older brothers were almost adults when he was born. However, they were actually only half-brothers, because his father was married twice before he married the mother of Wladyslaw, Eufrozyna. Independence of Finland

Independence Day was first celebrated in 1917. During the interregnum from the fall of Nicholas II to the end of the Finnish Civil War in 1918, sovereignty in Finland was exercised by the Finnish Parliament. And until the October Revolution and the declaration of independence by the Russian interim government which happened after the civil war, regents were appointed by the parliament and a new king was to be elected. The nation of Finland has never been an independent sovereign monarchy. No attempt to establish a fully-fledged Finnish monarchy has been successful. When it finally became established as a modern independent nation state it was, despite a very brief flirtation with a monarchy, in the form of a republic. And […]

Patentes a custo zero

Cubus: a giant grey square

Squares are not only for playing poker! In a town near to where I live in Bregenz, there is a House called Cubus, the Cubus is a giant grey square. This square is used as a museum for all kind of arts. Mostly artists of the new art wave expose their art in there. This interesting building was built in 1978 with the purpose of being a museum of modern arts. I chose this building because for me it is the most and best-known house of modern arts around. I have got to be honest, the arts are not my favorite type of creative outlets, but even though the couple of times I was there due to school trips, this […]

Schloss Schönbrunn in Vienna

It is nearly the only example of Austrian Rococo style It was built as the main summer residence of the Habsburg rulers and is located in Hietzing, Vienna. The Baroque Palace has about 1441 rooms and is one of the most important architectural, cultural and historical monuments in Austria. In 1569, King Maximilian II bought the place where the palace is now to use it for hunting. One year later the hunting lodge was built. Nearly 100 years later, King Leopold I assigned his son Joseph I, to build a new palace. In 1688 a plan was made, which would even excel the palace of Versailles. But it would be much too expensive and so in 1700, a much smaller […]

Centre Georges Pompidou

The controversial architecture of the building. The Centre Georges Pompidou is a building in Paris, in the Beaubourg area. This building is known for its atypical architecture, it was designed by Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano. In this building, we can find the musée National d’Art Moderne, a Library and the IRCAM (Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique). This building was built in 1977 and named after the French President Georges Pompidou from 1969 to 1974. The project was decided by President Georges Pompidou but the idea of multicultural complex came from André Malraux in the 1960s because Paris needed a new place for art and literature. The architecture of this building is controversial, people love it or hate it. […]

Architecture: The Penguin Pool

An example of Berthold Lubetkin’s extraordinary modernist vision The penguin pool which is placed in the London Zoo is a beautiful example of Berthold Lubetkin’s extraordinary modernist vision. Completed in 1934, it encapsulated an architectural transformation that was occurring in Britain at the time. Lubetkin who was a Jewish-Georgian immigrant to London pioneered modernism in the 1930s. His work transmitted and postulated the idea that architecture was a tool of social progression. Inspired by the French architect Auguste Perret, while studying in Paris, Lubetkin encompassed and embodied ideas of re-working the neoclassical style with newer materials like concrete. His architectural style was massively popular in Britain before the war, however, afterward, his ideas were halted by staunch conservatism and a […]

Wewelsburg Castle

They tried to burn the whole castle down, luckily without success. The most famous monument, in the region I live in, is the Wewelsburg Castle. It is a huge triangular Castle/fortress, whose history started in 1123, as a small, soon to be destroyed, city Wall like building. From 1301 until the 19th century, the Castle belonged to noblemen, bishops and the Prussian state and was more or less unknown to the overall population of Germany. This vastly changed in the 20th century during the time of the Second World War. Heinrich Himmler, the head of the SS (an elite police force of the Nazi regime), chose the Wewelsburg Castle as its headquarters, with the plan to turn it into the […]

Moszna castle

It looks like is from a fairytale. The castle in Moszna looks like it is from a fairytale. In the last years, it became one of the most popular monuments on the South of Poland. The castle impresses from the first sight. It has ninety-nine towers and three hundred sixty-five rooms. It was built in XVIII century in Baroque style. In 1896 a big part of the building was lost in the fire but it was rebuilt later and also new wings of the castle were built at the end of XIX and at the beginning of the XX century. The castle belonged to the noble family- Tiele-Winckler from Silesia who lived there until 1945. From that time the castle […]
