Henry II of France

The twenty-fifth Capetian King of France and the son of Francis I. He is the perfect representative of the figure of a French Renaissance monarch. Indeed, under his reign (from 1547 to 1559), a lot of great writers had the opportunity to enrich the classical literature of the country. We can think for example at Montaigne, Ronsard, Du Bellay and many more. It is also at that time that the new creative and artistic movement of La Pleiade emerged. When Henry was very young, he was made the prisoner of Emperor Charles Quint, being exchanged for his father’s freedom. He is released four years later. At the age of fourteen, he is married to Catherine of Medicis with who he […]

Mapas mostram mundo do século XVIII

Documentos estiveram esquecidos durante anos no sótão do museu.

King Louis IX – Saint-Louis

He had such a strong impact on the following kings. The article this month is about a King or a Queen of my country. France with a long, and complicated history had a lot of kings, some of them are more famous than the others, such as Louis XIV for example. But today I’m not going to speak to you about the “Roi-Soleil”. Let me introduce one of the most important kings, but also a quite unknown King of France: Louis IX aka Saint-Louis. Saint-Louis is the 44th King of France, from the Capétien family, his father is Louis VIII The Lion and his mother Blanche of Castille. He became king at the age of 12, but too young to […]

Casimir III the Great

The King of Poland from 1333 to 1370. He was the last Polish king from the Piast dynasty, born on 30 April 1310 in Kowal, died on 5 November 1370 in Kraków. He was the youngest, third son of King Wladyslaw I (“the Elbow-high”) and Duchess Jadwiga of Kalisz. When Casimir attained the throne in 1333, his position was in danger, as his neighbors did not recognize his title. The Polish kingdom was depopulated and exhausted by the war, and the economy was ruined. Thanks to Casimir the kingdom became prosperous and wealthy, with great prospects for the future. He waged many victorious wars and doubled the size of the kingdom, mostly through the addition of lands in modern-day Ukraine. […]

Charles II

His reign is one of great interest to many historians Charles II may not be one of the greatest military masterminds or a sly and cunning political figure, but he is one of the most exuberant, flamboyant, and promiscuous kings that England possessed. Known as the ‘merry monarch’ and a licentious playboy, his reign is one of great interest to many historians. His philandering became popular due to his liaisons with his Cockney mistress, Nell Gwyn. Before Charles was restored to the throne in 1660, after the Commonwealth years under “boring” Oliver Cromwell, Charles had to find a wife. Various German Princesses were offered for examination, but Charles would usually dismiss them as “dull and foggy”. Charles had a relationship […]

Independence of Finland

Independence Day was first celebrated in 1917. During the interregnum from the fall of Nicholas II to the end of the Finnish Civil War in 1918, sovereignty in Finland was exercised by the Finnish Parliament. And until the October Revolution and the declaration of independence by the Russian interim government which happened after the civil war, regents were appointed by the parliament and a new king was to be elected. The nation of Finland has never been an independent sovereign monarchy. No attempt to establish a fully-fledged Finnish monarchy has been successful. When it finally became established as a modern independent nation state it was, despite a very brief flirtation with a monarchy, in the form of a republic. And […]

Belgian Monarch: King Boudewijn

Let’s talk about the most iconic king Belgium has had in its history. Boudewijn was born in 1930, son of Prince Leopold, and his mother Astrid of Sweden who died in an automobile accident in 1935. On 15th of December 1960 he married to Dona Fabiola, unfortunately, they had no children. Remarkable facts: He replaced his father, King Leopold, at the age of just 21 due to the unpopularity of the former king. – During Boudewijns reign, the Belgian Congo became the independent Democratic Republic of Congo. – Boudewijn attended the state funeral of John F. Kennedy in November 1963, as head of state of the Belgian state – in 1990 Boudewijn refused to sign a bill permitting abortion, the […]

Friedrich Wilhelm III

Today’s article is about the German Emperor and King of Prussia He was born during the German monarchy on the 18th October 1831, in Potsdam and died at the age of 56, in June 1888. Friedrich was the son of the former Emperor Wilhelm the First and his wife Augusta. But the marriage wasn’t happy at all. Due to the fact that his parents had different opinions considering politics, Friedrich’s childhood was difficult and often lonely. His father was very conservative, so Friedrich had been raised in a military tradition since an early age. In spite of that, his mother had a more liberal point of view and persisted on an alternative to the military education, which was a classical […]

Monument to the bombing of Wieluń

For the 70th Anniversary of Outbreak of World War II. The black, marbled monument consists of two parts: a sculpture and memorial beneath it. The sculpture presents the bust of a crying man. He is holding his head with both hands. His grief is caused by the death of people who died during the attack of German bombers, mostly patients of the hospital. The writing on the memorial includes the following information: “ This is a place where a memorable act of violence happened and Nazi crimes over a defenseless population of the city of Wieluń on the first of September 1939, at 4:40”. During the first hours of World War II, German dive bombers started bombing the city of […]
