Prepare your Summer

Open your eyes to catch all the beauty of Madeira A French guy in Funchal will give you, this month, some tips to prepare your summer, as you’re coming soon in Madeira Island. Take what you want, but just know that some little mistakes are hidden! To begin, Madeira is a very cold Island, because It’s climate is very fresh. That’s why people always need to have and/or to wear a pullover, some waterproof sneakers, a pair of short trousers, and a waterproof sun hat. However, if you like to go to the beach, you’ll enjoy coming to Madeira, so don’t forget to bring with you your swimsuit and to buy a ticket for Porto Santo, it will worth it! To go […]

Madeira in the summer

The way there doesn’t even seem long because of the nice views. If I would have to describe the perfect summer day in Madeira, it would be something like this. Waking up before the sun is up, taking breakfast with me and going by car to Pico do Areeiro with a group of friends. There we would sit on the second highest point of Madeira and eat breakfast while watching the sunrise. After that, we would drive down the mountain through the beautiful Madeiran forest. Next stop would be Santana. There we would go visit the Madeira theme park. Of course, the park is pretty touristic, but spending a few hours there with friends could be fun. Seeing the typical […]

There you can see huge cliffs reaching out of the sea. This eastern peninsula of the island is from volcanic origins, it consists mostly basalt stone but also limestone sediment formations. Because of the pretty dry climate and the exposure to northern winds, there is low vegetation. It looks very different from the other parts of the island and this is what makes it so special. A nice fact is that the name of the vereda comes from the name of João Gonçalves Zarco’s caravel, São Lourenço. Zarco was one of the three discoverers of Madeira. For me, this walk is definitely one that you NEED to do when you are in Madeira, it’s one of the most beautiful walks […]

How not waste a summer in Madeira

Let me give you some non-qualified tips for the months to come. To be honest, I have not been in Madeira during the hottest months of summer. My experience started in September what I would still call summer due to the heat. Madeira is very versatile and full of possible activities. That is the reason why I love this island. People who love the sea have several options to explore the Atlantic Ocean. Snorkeling and scuba diving let you discover the biodiversity of the sea dwellers. But not everyone likes to dive in the dark and deep ocean and some rather stay above the surface of the water, at least with their heads. There are still enough activities, such as […]

E enquanto […]

Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh: of the most famous artists of the 19th century. This fame is not only because his art, but also because of his life. He was born in 1853, in a village near the Belgian border. When starting adulthood he did not really know what to do. He first became a schoolteacher, then a book salesman, studied theology and became a preacher in a coal mine. He did not really do well in all these jobs and got fired for all of them. Eventually, his brother Theo convinced Vincent to become an artist after seeing the sketches he made. He moved around in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Paris before eventually moving to the village of Arles in France, […]

British Experiences of Iberia

Comparing my first experiences of Iberian life to the British soldiers who arrived in 1807. Upon arriving in Madeira I read The British Soldier in the Peninsular War (G. Daly, Hobart, 2013) in order to learn more about the history of the island. I have compared my experiences to the soldiers who occupied Madeira from 1807. The first thing that struck me upon arrival was the temperate weather and dramatic terrain. Lieutenant Sherer of the Cumberland Regiment was similarly taken, describing the wooded mountains of Portugal as ‘enchanting’. However upon entering the cities the initial optimism of the soldiers turned to revulsion; John Douglas wrote home complaining of poor hygiene and disease in Lisbon. While I have not been to […]

Your own personal mountains

Dare to feel like a king of the island? After having set my adventurous foot on three trails connecting Pico Ruivo with the south (Pico do Areeiro), the east (Achadas do Teixeira) and the north (Ilha), I once again channelled my inner explorer to check the last remaining path – Vereda da Encumeada (PR 1.3) going west, to the mountain pass at Encumeada. And this vereda is no fooling around, this is not for Sunday hikers in flip-flops or the likes of a guy I once saw at roughly 1700 meters above sea level, carrying his equipment in a plastic bag from a well-known supermarket. This hike alone is 11,2 kilometers long and you still have to reach or descend […]

My luggage

This month I’m going to Spain, and in this text I want to talk just a bit about the news in my luggage. In my luggage I’ll put the normal things, like clothes, shoes, sunscreen, but I also want to take some specific new things that I obtained in Madeira like new language skills, new friends, new knowledge. I’ll also take lots of histories about my job, my adventures, about the lovely people that I met here. I’ll also take new first experiences, my first picnic, my first successful hitchhiking and camping for the first time. I’ll also tell them the way that I’ve learnt how to be more patient, how to be more open, how I discovered some proper […]

Old ones & new ones

Upon the arrival of new volunteers, I realized that I am the “old” one now. When I got here, to Funchal, four months ago, I could count on the help and experience of volunteers that got here several months before me. I perceived them as my “mentors” when it comes to practical stuff regarding living in the residence and getting around the city. They showed me the fastest route to work, where to buy vegetables and of course what does the word “poncha” mean. And their help was even more appreciated when it comes to free-time activities. Like finding great camping spots, recommending hiking trails and levadas, bars, museums and other attractions. Of course I’ve learned and discovered a lot […]

People from the North

Be open, keep short distance, put on smiling face and share it. Two months ago, me and my friends had a pleasure to visit continental part of Portugal. We spent two days in Porto and for a week we could live in a place, where portuguese statehood was born – in Guimaraes. If I can be honest, it was not how I imagined. Only one script “Aqui nasceu Portugal”, which is hanging on the huge, surrounding old town defencive wall inform tourists about this fact. The population of the city is 120 thousend people, but it seems to be even less. Architecture of this place is stunning. Original medieval main square in the heart of the downtown, with a whole […]

Gadgets during your stay

I wondered what is really important to take with me. I wanted be sure I take everything I need. Before my arrival to Madeira I was searching in a google some information about climate on the island to prepare the appropriate clothing and footwear. When I was preparing my suitcase I was thinking in this way: on Madeira is ocean and mountains, so I have to be prepared for sunbathing and hiking. I will work as a guide, so I need comfortable shoes and sun cream. Yeah, sun cream… Definitely need to get a cream with a high filter, like UV 50. I just FORGOT I´ll be on the same level as Morocco and unfortunately I bought cream with UV […]
