Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh: of the most famous artists of the 19th century. This fame is not only because his art, but also because of his life. He was born in 1853, in a village near the Belgian border. When starting adulthood he did not really know what to do. He first became a schoolteacher, then a book salesman, studied theology and became a preacher in a coal mine. He did not really do well in all these jobs and got fired for all of them. Eventually, his brother Theo convinced Vincent to become an artist after seeing the sketches he made. He moved around in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Paris before eventually moving to the village of Arles in France, […]

Jan Matejko

Jan Matejko is probably the most known Polish painter. He born in 1838 in Krakow and he specialized in historical and battle paintings. One of his most famous canvas is “The Battle of Grunwald”, painted in 1872–1878. It represents a really important event in Polish history, the victory of the allied Crown of the Kingdom of Poland and Grand Duchy of Lithuania over the Teutonic Order in 1410. It is displayed in the National Museum in Warsaw. His other famous paintings which we can find there are: “Stańczyk” and “The Prussian Homage”, among others. He has huge national and international success and won many notable awards again both national and international. “O primeiro grande” dinossauro

Alvar Aalto

He did some really nice pieces of art. We were supposed to write about a painter from our own countries. But to be honest, in Finland, we don’t have any painters who would be really impressive for me or either known world-wide. So I decided to write about Alvar Aalto, an architect and a designer I personally like. Alvar Aalto was born in the 3rd of February 1898 in Kuortane. In 1921 he graduated from Helsinki’s technical academy. During his time in the academy, he took part in the civil war in Finland. After graduating he moved away from the capital city, to Jyväskylä. There he made his own architect office, following the Scandinavian design, which was popular at that time. […]

Rinoceronte-branco extinto?

Karel Appel

The paintings look (a little bit) like child drawings. This man is an internationally renowned Dutch painter, whose paintings look (at least according to critics) like they were painted by a child himself. Also, Karel stated: ´I just mess up something´. Others say this was not completely true, they say there was a big theory behind the paintings. Christiaan Karel Appel was born in 1921 in Amsterdam, he studied there at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. At the academy, he met two other artists with who he became close friends, Corneille and Constant. With these friends and a few others, he founded Cobra in 1948 at an international conference in Paris. This was an international movement of painters and […]

The master among Dutch painters in the Dutch Golden Age. Rembrandt Hamerszoon van Rijn was a Dutch painter, etcher, drawer and art collector. He is considered as one of the greatest painters in European art. Besides, he is the most important Dutch painter of the 17th century. This century is also known as the Dutch Golden Age because Dutch art was one of the most acclaimed in the world in that time. Rembrandt manufactured approximately 300 paintings, 300 etchings and 2000 drawings. These works belong to the Baroque style and were influenced by the Caravaggesque style. Both styles find their origin in Italy and are related to strong emotional expressions and extravagancy even though he has never been to Italy. […]

Was the European Union a bad idea?

I studied European Structural and Investment Funds and I thought that it would be interesting to see what the EU have done for Madeira. As a pro-European, and even though I am well aware that some people are sceptical about this whole idea, I want to believe that the European Union can only be beneficial to its member states. The European Structural and Investment Funds (ESI Funds) are the European Union’s main investment policy tool: 454 billion euros have been allocated from the EU budget to be invested in more than 500 programmes. Together with national co-financing of 183 billion euros, the total investments amounts to at least 637 billion euros. With this budget, the ESI Funds have become increasingly […]

Romance with the Mountains

I am in the middle of my EVS project and I feel hungrier and hungrier of discovering Madeira and people all around me. Is so many views to see, kilometres to walk and topics to talk about. My brain has already registered many gorgeous memories, mostly during my free time when I was among the nature, especially in the mountains. As said Peter Croft, Canadian rock climber and mountaineer: There is such good stuff in the mountains. This stuff is free and you can take it for free. Rock star says that his first love is guitar, Sailor´s heart belong to the Ocean, and I can say that Mountains are my lover. As a teenager I was very active scout, […]

Architectural heritage

You can vote in referendum, write a petition or have a deep discussion with councillor about architecture. Don´t let your heritage desapear. Every single day, when I am walking around the down town of FunchaI I can see hundreds of buildings in poor conditions. Sometimes I am afraid of going next to them – nobody wants to be hit by felling down layers. The residents of that places are cats and homeless people, who risks a lot, because the God only knows when they may collapse. In the effect of huge emigration of Madeiran, people started to leaving their properties and houses without care. The Portuguese low is saying that if you don´t take response for your building, for the […]

Expectations versus reality

As Madeira is not the first Portuguese island which I visited, I knew what I should expect here. Before coming to Madeira I spend part of my studies on Erasmus exchange program in Azores and because of that I did not think ‘always expect unexpected’. When I arrived I was not surprised by the Madeiran weather, climate, high humidity, cockroaches, lizards, and very narrow streets. People were also very nice and the city of Funchal seemed like a safe place. However, what surprised me at first was that Funchal is much bigger and it hosts much more tourists that I thought. That is why, in my opinion, people here are more open to other cultures. Also because of that, many […]

How to stay motivated

Hard to believe, but even when you live in Madeira after some time your life eventually becomes “normal” You stop choosing to walk by the ocean, because that route it’s longer; you get stuck in a rut when it comes to work; you feel like you’re just doing the same thing every weekend and in your free time and you think you’ll never going to actually learn Portuguese. Is there a way out of this dead end? Well yes, there is, but you need to make an effort. I realized I need to create a “life” outside of my usual surroundings, separate from work, colleagues and the residence. The easiest way to do it is by making new friends among […]
