The artist with a funny mustache

A young man who became very famous in a very short time. Young man, born in the city just next to mine, who became very famous in a very short time and became one of my favorites musicians. If you ask me about polish musicians I won’t tell you much – usually, I listen to music from abroad. This summer my friends invited me to join them for a music festival, where I have discovered there is a lot of great artists who actually sing in polish. One of them was Dawid Podsiadlo, a 25 years old singer with a great voice and unique style. Dawid Podsiadlo started his career as a musician after winning “X Factor” show in 2012 and […]

A Musician from my Country?

I picked a musician from Austria There are no famous musicians from Liechtenstein. As you may know, Liechtenstein is a very small country. Therefore it is very hard to find a famous musician from there, because, we don’t have any successful musicians. We do have small bands and other music groups, but none of them are worth writing about, so I picked a musician from Austria to write about instead. So the musician I’m writing about instead is called “Yung Hurn”. He’s an Austrian Rapper from the capital Vienna. His original name is Julian Sellmeister and he was born in 1995. He dropped out of high school and started rapping. His mixtape “22” was an instant hit, especially his hit […]

Austrian Legend: Falco

He lived how he died… SPECTACULAR When I got the email with the information about this month’s article I was just listening to “Ganz Wien” by the Austrian legend Falco! So, obviously, the case was clear and I chose him for this Text. Falco, whose birth name is Johann “Hans” Hölzl was born in 1957 in Vienna. Falco attended several different forms of education and schools, however, none of them seemed to fit. In the end, he quit his music studies because “he wanted to become a real musician”. His first studio album “Der Kommissar” (the commissioner) rapidly dominated the Austrian club scene and was wildly popular in several other European countries. His second album “Junge Roemer” was, sadly, kind […]

Governo defende o E.S. gratuito

Visible and invisible similarities

I can tell Funchal is not that different from where I used to live. In my opinion, you can look at the two cities with two different perspectives. In a physical way but also in a psychological way. The visible and the invisible way of comparing cities with each other. The easiest way to compare similarities is what you see, the physical things. For example buildings, streets, churches, and cars. Firstly, what I noticed when I arrived in Funchal is that there are a lot of taxis and buses! Just like the place where I used to live in the Netherlands, here in Madeira the distances between villages are too far to do only by foot. Where I used to […]

Funchal vs. Bludenz

About what my new home has in common with my old one. About the life in a small town between alps and about the similarities of my old and new home. Since I was born, I have lived in Bludenz, which is a small town in the western part of Austria. With 15.000 inhabitants it is the smallest town of the federal state Vorarlberg. It has an area from 29,94 km², an elevation of 588 meters and it lies at the meeting point of five valleys. However, my new home is Funchal. I have lived here since the beginning of August, and although it is so different from my original home, there are a lot of similarities. Funchal has about […]

Germany and Madeira

Differences and similarities between Germany and Madeira. My name is Anne, I am part of the voluntary project in Madeira. Therefore, I want to share my thoughts on the comparison between Germany and Madeira. Although, Madeira is on the border of Europe, close to Africa there are lots of similarities between Germany and Madeira. You can find some typical German food in the supermarket like Haribo or Nürnberger Würstchen. Most of the people are very nice, helpful and dressed like people in Germany. And last but not least we share the same currency, the Euro. However, there are also some differences. Due to the fact that the weather is much better than in Germany, the people are more tanned and […]

Two very different cities

Funchal and Vaduz: so different that it is very hard to find similarities. My home city is Vaduz. It is the capital city of Liechtenstein. Funchal is the capital city of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. Madeira seems to be pretty big if you compare Liechtenstein to the Autonomous Region of Madeira. Even Funchal is a lot bigger than my home city Vaduz. Vaduz has only 17,3 km² and Funchal has 76,25 km². One can also spot the difference by the number of inhabitants. Funchal has twenty times the amount of the inhabitants of Vaduz. Funchal and my home city seem to be really distant and they are. It is really hard to find a lot of similarities and it […]

Cities of the World

Boom and Funchal offers a big list of cultural activities As Boom and Funchal are quite different in infrastructure and style, they are both considered to be world cities by size, recognisability, and status. They both host a great number of people as Funchal is a touristic hub under the Madeiran flag, so does the annual gathering of people in the city of Boom for the biggest music festival in the world, Tomorrowland. Both are host to a great variety of people from all over the world. As a huge portion of Madeiran tourists is German, English or American; so Boom has visitors from all corners of Europe, as well as people from all over the world. Both are positioned […]

An ocean of differences?

Funchal and Warsaw – the list of similarities between both places. Funchal and my home city are so distant, however, what are their similarities? In this united Europe, what do our cities share in this Union of, so far, 28 countries? What comes to my mind are mostly differences. In terms of the number of citizens, area, architecture and landscape that surrounds both cities. But where I see the biggest difference is climate. In Warsaw and generally Poland, weather is quite unpredictable. During summer days there might be an average of thirty-five degrees plus. On the other hand, sometimes in winter, the thermometer can show minus twenty-five degrees Celsius. While Madeiran temperatures are more stable throughout the year. Secondly, I […]
