A legend of Ireland

Michael Collins was a soldier and a politician who was an important part in fighting for Ireland’s independence in the 20th century. Around that time there was a lot of tension in Ireland as Britain was trying to take over.  Michael was born in Cork in 1890. After he left school, he worked in London for nine years and it was here that he became involved in Irish nationalist politics. He became a member of the main nationalist party in Ireland at the time and still today, Sinn Fein, in 1908 and later joined the IRB; the Irish Republican Brotherhood. He then returned to Dublin in January 1916 and took part in the Easter Rising, On Easter Monday, April 24, 1916, a group […]

The legend of Smok Wawelski

Every nation has its own traditions, and an integral part of these traditions are countless myths and legends. Even though they are considered only partially true they still constitute an important aspect of national heritage. At first oral, then written stories are handed down from generation to generation. Despite changing times and cultural trends the great national value of these stories remains intact across the centuries, enriching the national culture and identity of the people. Poland also has its own legends about kings or princesses but the most famous is about the dragon, well known to every Polish child, is the legendary Smok Wawelski who inhabited a cave near the Wawel Castle in Kraków. “Once upon a time there was […]

Culturally active countries

Macedonia – one of the most culturally active countries The region of Macedonia is one of the most culturally active in Europe. For the last few centuries, the region was determined by the neighbouring states, leaving no room for the local people to establish their own country. It was only in the 20th century that the Macedonian people were able to establish their own state. Ancient times  Humans were settling in these regions since the Neolithic period. Soon after, the region was occupied by the Greeks and was influenced by their culture but, in turn, also influenced Greek politics. With the rise of Alexander the Great, a Macedonian, the region experienced its first peak, which made the ancient kingdom of […]

A brief history of Croatia

Croatia is situated between central and southeast Europe, with a population of around 4 million. There is lots of evidence of Croatia being populated during the prehistoric period, fossils of Neanderthals have been found in the north of the country and the most famous place is in Krapina, where over eight hundred fossils were found. In 9 AD Croatia became a part of the Roman Empire, until the 7th century when the Avar and Croat peoples invaded and destroyed most of the Roman towns. The Roman survivors fled to the coast, islands and mountains. Dubrovnik, a city on the southern coast of the country, was established by these survivors. Duke Branimir, who received recognition from the Pope John VIII, was […]

The history of one Balkan state

The history of the first Bulgarian state dates back to the 7th century. Bulgaria was founded by Asparukh in 681. The Christianisation of the state began at the end of the 9th century. At the beginning of the 11th century Bulgaria was conquered by Byzantium. After more than 100 years, a major uprising restored the Bulgarian state to form the Second Bulgarian Empire. Bulgaria was flourishing over the next two centuries until it disintegrated into two smaller states, which were eventually subjugated by the Ottoman Empire. The Turks eliminated Bulgarian knighthood, deprived Bulgarian citizens of their rights and subordinated the Church to the Patriarch of Constantinople. Bulgaria remained an integral Turkish territory for the next 500 years. A great uprising […]

My University

I studied at the University of Reading for three years. My degree was in History and Politics. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. Reading is in Berkshire which is about a thirty minute train ride from London Paddington. The University itself has some significant history attached to it. It was formerly part of Oxford University’s Christ Church College but was granted independence to produce its own degrees by a Royal Charter from King George V. It was also the first university to appoint a woman as a chair at an English University level-institution in 1912. The University also boasts having the renowned Twentieth Century composer Gustav Holst as a Professor of music.  Reading University can also proclaim one of the […]

Can the European project survive?

The project “Europe” is stumbling. Now more than ever. Opinions tend to differ sharply when it comes to questions concerning refugees, the rise of far right parties and racism against minorities. The European Union seems to fall apart as countries discuss the leaving of this once-so-promising project. So the question arises, what can we – as individuals – do to save this venture? How can we make sure that our grandchildren will have the same privileges that we have now?  I think the most basic and most important precondition is to be OPEN. To be open towards new cultures, new people, new habits. To be open towards new norms, new ideas, new point of views. Only when we mutually approach […]
