Full of memories

I have already experienced so much, and there is still so much to do! The most beautiful places and moments in your life will always stay in your heart and memories. But what I’m scared of here is that I experience so many moments and see so many places that I want to remember the rest of my life, but the memories just fade away. I can’t choose if I will remember my last weekend’s hike or the moments when I’m laughing with my roommates so hard, that I fall from my bed. Christmas is here! Or is it?

Three days until Christmas, and this feels even weirder than I expected. Once again I’m comparing my life here now and my life before this experience. Christmas for me usually means snow, family, lots of candles, snow, dark days and snow. This year I won’t get any of these. Okay, I can arrange the candles myself, but not the other things. I’ve been here in Madeira now seven weeks, and I have made new friends and contacts, went hiking to beautiful places, started a new hobby and made so many wonderful memories already. Living the dream. But the training made me think about the reasons why I wanted to do volunteering, why I came here and what I’m going to do to […]

What I missed about Portugal

In spring I did my short-term EVS in Portugal, Palmela. There are some things I realised I’ve been missing. 1) The sun. Okay, so I spent my spring in sunny Portugal, went home for a sunny summer and came here to spend the next 10 months in the sun. Well, now I remember that we don’t actually have sun in Finland, even in summer. At home you have to carry your jacket with you all the time and you don’t have to wear any sun lotion. When I did both of those things here, I noticed that the first one was unnecessary and the second one was a huge mistake. 2) The food. Pasteis de nata, bolo do caco, bifanas, […]
